May I add that I really don't like the choices for multi choice question 2. They're all essentially negative emotions/themes and I don't see metal as being exclusively or even significantly defined that way, although most outsiders would. I am attracted to certain albums/bands that give me the feeling of strength or empowerment or inspiration or beauty and I imagine a lot of metal listeners would be the same. I don't think metal should be regarded as simply an outlet for negative emotions.

And in any event, wouldn't 'sadness' be a much more commonly recurring theme/emotion than say 'fear'?

May I add that I really don't like the choices for multi choice question 2. They're all essentially negative emotions/themes and I don't see metal as being exclusively or even significantly defined that way, although most outsiders would. I am attracted to certain albums/bands that give me the feeling of strength or empowerment or inspiration or beauty and I imagine a lot of metal listeners would be the same. i don't like the multiple choice method for that question period. all (good) metal rebels against social norms, and the social norms targeted are rooted in existential fears, and maybe there's something necessarily lonely (or at least solitary) about this process of rebellion, etcetc. i can't be bothered to write an essay about it but yeah, a lot of it's inter-related. same applies to the first multiple choice question actually.

i don't like anger in music (or people for that matter) having said that, twould be my last choice, along with loneliness if loneliness involves self-pity.
