Evergrey

Hmmm.. if you dont like in your face keys, you will most likely not like the new children of bodom.

funny how alexi just bashed on dream theater for having a lot of keys, but their latest is like (imagine a synth doing this with diatonic stabs):

""daaaa (16th chugs)...... na naaaa (16th chugs)..... na naaaa (16th chugs)"
I never liked them, it is not just the keyboards it is like everything...

I like bands like Evergrey, Soilwork, Andromeda and Opeth from the newer bands who have a good amount of "keys", but CoB just never clicked with me... The vocals, the lyrics, the solos, the whole image... Yuck!

Fredrik,

Can you give details on which cd used which gear? I've watched the DVD over and over a bunch of times, including the recording session portions, but never got an inkling as to what gear was being used. I'd love to know specifics for ISOT especially. The DVD concentrated on the last cd as far as their gear talk goes... Caparison, 5150 and Marshall for leads. I think I've asked this stuff over on the EG forum here at UM as well, and no one really knew anything.

Thanks,
Jeff

Well depending on what album you want to sound like they've used Digitech2120, Randall RH100, Triaxis, 5150 plus i know what Henke favours his JCM900 highly when it comes to redording lead guitars.

Im meeting with Andy LaRoque in a couple of weeks to discuss him mixing our next release. He would know if anybody so I'll ask him if I can remember to.
I suspect highly that their first couple of albums is a Digitech preamp together with a modified Marshall Valvestate head, since that's the thing Andy preferred using while recording a couple of years ago (Im almost certain that The Dark Discovery is)

Yeh, bodom have gone crap now imo, no even remotely good solo's on the latest album they seem to be more focused on looking good on stage these days. I just hope the new sinergy album isn't a complete flop as well. I've been disappointed with the new bodom, the new opeth, and the new arch enemy, all of them not as good as their previous albums. Haven't like arch enemy much since wages of sin, bodom since hate crew deathroll, and opeth since deliverance.
:erk:... w/e, haven't heard the new bodom but the new AE and Opeth albums great. you may have to listen more than once, but if you are a fan of good music, there's just no denying those two albums. i mean, unless your still a teenager and just wanna hear double-kick and growling constantly on everything.

I'll ignore the teenager comment... :p

Awesome! Thanks for checking on this, Fredrik. I know there are lots of us tone-freaks that love to know nitty gritty details like that. Feel free to get as many details as you can if Andy is willing to talk about it.

Regs,
Jeff

I think Evergrey do have moments where they shine, but also a lot of filler riffs, made just to lay some groundwork for vocal parts.

The only album of theirs I've heard in any real depth is Recreation Day, which has some fantastic parts and also some mediocre parts.

The new Opeth is fantastic.
Haven't heard the new AE. I was never the biggest fan.

I'd say they have 4 total masterpieces, Solitude Dominance Tragedy, In Search Of Truth, Recreation Day and The Inner Circle.
Absolutely no bad song there, only some are absolutely awesome and some are "just" awesome... ;)

The new Opeth is fantastic.
