Sorry if this has already been discussed - can't get any sense out of the 'search'.

So has anyone tried one yet? I had a very quick play on one on Saturday, and it sounded pretty damn good to my ears. Obviously quite similar to the Peavey versions, but maybe a little bit tighter. Fucking MAD amounts of gain though - putting it halfway up was more than I can get out of even my nastiest pedal, and way more than I would ever use. The clean channel sounded pretty nice too, I'd say it was more usable than the Peavey's.

I also had a quick play on the Bugera copy (or whatever they're called) - I wouldn't like to judge it on the brief muck about I had, but it didn't sound awful. It looked like a painted cardboard box though, so probably not that sturdy (same goes for the EVH actually).

I tried one for about 30 mins at a store and hated it.....It took me like 2 min to dial in a tone on my 5150 Block letter EVH peavey.

I have yet to see a 5150III in person as this areas GC sucks about as much cock as verace and only seems to stock walls of marshall MG stacks. uke:

The bugera heads however I assume they got some of those because they love the cheap stuff!

Someone whose opinion I greatly value told me the 5150 III was great, had slightly more attack than the previous version. And from the mix I heard using it, it does sound amazing!!!

I heard that Fender sold the first ones with different power amp tubes and that a few sounded really bad because of that and others sounded great, or sounded great after a tube change, every sample I heard sounded ok or great, never played it by myself.

It is one of the best amp heads on the market for less than £2000, I've spent hours on our half stack and love the tones you can get from it. Run the clean channel on full gain and it's an awesome pushed Plexi, 3rd channel on half gain and it's a monster.

Afaik the amps back in the day lacked severely in gain. AC/DC tone being the "extreme" tone of the day

I read somewhere that Eddie liked the Soldano SLO and that's where the 5150 came from? Then again I can't remember what I smoked for breakfast today. I do know that Eddie used to push his amp up all the way and lowered the volume with a variax by attenuating the input voltage down to 80-90 as opposed to 110. That would lead me to think that the power section made more of a difference back in the day. Kinda like AC/DC on steroids. Now his tone is OK, but I sure miss the old tones he had. Especially on Fair Warning album. Seems like the preamp distortion took over, and the power section was left behind.

AMEN TO THAT! I'm going to see VH live in a month, so I'll get to hear all the bitchin songs with new tone. It seems like on Diver Down to 1984 his guitar started to sound like a strat. Kinda twangy. It's still cool; It's Eddie! I like his old THICK sound better though. FAIR WARNING has always been my fav VH album. Eddie calls it his DARK album. haha
