EVH 5150 vs. Axe FX 5150

Funny, if he would not have given the results in the first post, no one would have been able to say it sounds "thinner", "nasal", "plastic" or any other negative attribute. The time when amp sims could be spotted is over.

I didn't read the results before posting. Made comments based on their own merits, and stick by them. Quite impressed how well the Axe came off here. Having less fizzy top-end stuff than the real amp isn't a negative for me. Though the aggressiveness of the real amp works better for Ola's playing here, and for the riff.

The first clip just sticks out that much more. The 2nd has more of that 2 dimensional impulse trademark i've come to loathe. Something that is detremental to big rock guitars in particular, maybe a grainyness and a trait that pushes it to the back of the mix more.

It is of course still perfectly usable and sounds great, it's just these are the tiny touches that will add up in abundance to paint the best possible picture in the end I figure.

I'd be interested to hear the "junk" frequencies cut out of the original 5150 clip to see if they are what skews my view. Will have a look at that later perhaps.

This is so lame, but expected. Use a real amp and tell that it is a modeller: Everyone says, it sounds good but isn't the real deal.

C'mon without the results given, you would not hit more then 50% in a blind test.

I WOULD kill for a good video or audio review thru the axe fx using a real cab
made by Ola

i think that if this comparison were made using the same cab (not impulses)
the difference would be minimal (and many of us wouldn't be able to distinguish them from each other)

I tried the Axe-FX side by side with my 5150, using the Mesa 4x12 for each... You can definitely tell the difference.

I think most people who regularly record mic'd cabs around these parts could identify the difference in resolution here and in most other tests. I've spent hours on it myself and I'd love to have it work out. I don't particularly enjoy the trouble of laying mic cables around, the volume of cabs and the expense of tube amps FWIW ;)

There is a clear difference. The Axe sounds like a 5150, but a castrated 5150. Zero balls. It sounds too clean, very little saturation.

Hey people, let's face it, as soon as it's says "Axe-FX/Modeller/digital" people are searching very active for flaws, and because it's digital, it has to be wrong. Let's say that the first would've been the Axe-FX then it'd be "typical digital fizzy like all other modellers" and bla bla yadiyada whatever.

They both sound good, yes there's a slight difference, but ffs! Yeah, Ola is a tweaker, and he doesn't have to buy an EVH 5150III. Good for him! That's fucking awesome! Be happy and stop that pathetic "toobz/digital" shit.

Not only here, but every-fucking-where on the forums I've been on. Again. Sorry for the rant.

Please continue.

I agree. I love tube amps(and my axe) no question about it. But I think the hate on digital amps is over exaggerated.

This is fun though, now I feel obligated to do an even more accurate preset on my Axe FX. Give me the day and I'll post a clip tonight! :p

Impressed by the axe fx in that clip, especially since the 5150 had the advantage of going through a real cab.

Yeah likewise. I initially misread the OP and assumed the 2nd was the real amp, and none of it really bugged me. I even though both went through a real cab for some reason, and thought nothing of it.

The fact that it's Axe + impulses is really impressive. It does lack a little bite and aggression, but I'd be really curious how much using the real cab would make up for that.

Next time around both should go through the cab and it should definitely be a blind test!

This is probably the best and by far the most realistic clip of the Axe I've heard... really curious to hear what it's like running through a cab. If it performs even better, I could be considering biting the bullet.

The 5150 has a bit more bite and attack to it, but I have a feeling thats more so due to more going on in the higher mids, while the Axe-FX seems to have a bit of a fuller sounding bottom, giving that effect of slightly less attack. Both sound really good man. That mic'd track sounds great. The Axe-FX is awfully close, good job all round bro!

I think if the axe fx went into a power section and was recorded mic'd, it would be getting near impossible to tell the difference, but then thats probably true for every amp modeller. It would be cool to get some blind tests if you have any time ola.
