mine would be In Flames' cover of "everything counts" by depeche mode and of course Opeth's cover of "circle of tyrants" by celtic frost

I´d say Murder Squad did a very excellent cover of Autopsy
on their Insane, Unsane and Mentally Deranged album!
As did Dismember on their Misanthropic MCD

Nokturne covering Black Metal live was amazing! And Noctuary playing Aces High live was killer as well. On album, I'd say Rainbow Demon is great by Vintersorg, and Otyg's Holy Diver.

This is just too damn difficult to answer properly. I've heard some bands take some very unique approaches to the music they were influenced by.

At the present time, I'd have to say the cover that most impresses me is Iced Earth's version of "Burnin' For You", originally by Blue Oyster Cult.

I think that is the worst rape of all times! I'm a big fan of Gary Moore, and Nightwish didn't even bother to change anything in the song. I wouldn't change anything, but what's the point in doing a cover song if you don't have any ideas? Money...

I myself think gary moore has really much better singing voice than tarja.

Although he might be a litte uglier...

It may be just me. I already loved the original song, so I can't stand Nightwish's version. I just think it smells like a selling trick...

I must say I really like Nightwish's version of "Over the hills...". Probably because I like Nightwish in general. I've heard the original version by Gary Moore, and indeed, Nightwish didn't change a single note in the song (I think), but what the heck.

I also love Death's version of Painkiller (which is also not that far from the original, maybe a bit more technical though), but I think my fav cover version of all time is Paranoid by Type O Negative.
And maybe Orgasmatron played live by Sepultura!

Just to be different, I'm going to say "Get Down, Make Love" by NIN. It maintained the original "Queen" feel, but was undeniably NIN (what with the japanese porn sounds and all..)
