The texture of the soul is a liquid that casts a vermillion flood
From a wound carved as an oath; it fills the river bank a sanguine fog
These arms were meant to be lost! Hacked, severed and forgotten
The texture of time is a whisper that echoes across the flood
It's hymn resonates from tree to tree, through every sullen bough it sings
These boughs were said to be lost! Torn, unearthed and broken
Earth to flesh, flesh to wood, cast these limbs into the water
Flesh to wood, wood to stone, cast this stone into the water...

Those lyrics sound pretty good :kickass:

why won't this fucking show up already?
ah well, the one disadvantage of being Canadian as opposed to American

I am disappointed with the production, the guitars often sound too thin and the drums, especially at the beginning of NUTW, sound like they were imported from the sessions for And Justice For All. And ending the album with seven minutes of noise isn't the best idea Agalloch has stumbled upon. Aside from this, the album is another work of genius. Limbs; Fire Above, Ice Below, the first two parts of Our Fortress are in the running for best song honors. Because of the reservations above, I can't give this a 10, but the highest 9 possible.

yeah, so i see agalloch fell for the "noise as music" schtick. seriously, a cover of Baby, One More Time would have been better.

other than that, solid album

I'm perfectly content with the noise finale, way to depart on a dark mood. Actually it's a nice change from "The Mantle", where "Desolation Song", though lovely, was a bit of a rosewater closure and stuff

Hmm, that song is pretty much one of the highlights of that album for me.

yes yes, but I think it's a good move they've opted for quite the contrast this time. I like to leave an album on the impression that it's over and there's no turning back.

That's the reason why I revere the way "The Wall" is ending, among others.

A Desolation Song does have a sense of finality for me, it certainly wouldn't have worked anywhere else on the album. I do like when something resembling a quote from Bloodbirds appears in ultra-processed form in the noise track (about four minutes), but it's still a letdown after one of the most epic tracks Agalloch has written.

After only two listens I have to agree with this statement thus far. I don't see why Not Unlike The Waves is the runaway winner in the poll.

And I don't think the last track is that bad. At least it's listenable noise unlike some of the same kind I've heard.

Limbs, Fire Above, Ice Below, and Not Unlike The Waves seem to be the tracks that I enjoy most after repeated listens, in particular the latter. It seems that my attention fades a bit after Not Unlike The Waves and The Fortress trilogy is a more passive listen.

Huh. I thought more people would dig "Falling Snow." It was released quite awhile before the album though, right? Maybe that's it.

I like everything so far, not sure about the last track though. Limbs, Falling Snow, Fire Above and NUTW are all amazing. Needs a lot more time.

I never bothered listening to Falling Snow before it leaked. According to people who've heard it, it's not the same version, and the album one is much better. From the clean singing to the end it's amazing.
