OK...there are some guitar solos that completely grab me by the spine and shake me when I hear them...how about we get a thread going where we all post our favorites...

In no particluar order:

1) Cliff Burton's bass solo after the middle break on "Orion" - Fucking AWESOME, and something I play every time I practice...

2) Dave Mustaine's solo on "Tornado of Souls". I don't think there is one note out of place from start to finish...

3) Dave Murray and Adrian Smith's solo trading during the breakdown on "Alexander the Great"...enough said...

4) Dave Mustaine's solo on "Bad Omen" (Or maybe it was Chris Poland's - not quite sure)...either way, very aggressive and fits the song perfectly.

5) Glen Tipton and KK Downing's solo trading on "Green Manalishi", especially the live version on "Unleashed in the East"...anytime I hear it I get pumped up to play...

Good call on Hetfield's solo Iced - I actually play Jame's solo on my bass and run it right into Cliff's - sounds really cool in the lower octave...AWESOME FUCKING TUNE...

Well Iced came first with it but I have to add more:

Metallica - 'Orion'
Deep Purple - 'Son Of Alerik'
Rainbow - 'Lost In Hollywood'
Judas Priest - 'Beyond The Realms Of Death'
Iron Maiden - 'Prodigal Son'
Thin Lizzy - 'Still In Love With You' ("BBC Radio One Live" version)
Joe Satriani - 'The Forgotten pt.2'

"The Fires Of Mars" by Manilla Road from "Open The Gates." A spine tingling solo by overlooked guitar great Mark Shelton.

Peace, Ulf

:OMG:

I have so many, lol, but I'll just narrow 'em down:

Metallica: Creeping Death, Fade to Black, Damage Inc.
Megadeth: Good Mourning/Black Friday, My Last Words, Hangar 18, Holy Wars
Guns n' Roses: Sweet Child O'Mine, Don't Cry, November Rain
Nevermore: This Sacrament, Deconstruction
Ozzy Osbourne: Over the Mountain, Crazy Train, Bark at the Moon
Children of Bodom: Towards Dead End, Silent Night... Bodom Night
Iron Maiden: Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Clansman, The Nomad, The Wicker Man
Judas Priest: Painkiller
Black Sabbath: War Pigs, Iron Man
Symphony X: Out of the Ashes

Many of my fave guitar solos would be by Wolf Hoffmann so I will limit them to five...

"Aiming High" - Accept/ Wolf Hoffmann
"it's Hard to Find a Way" - Accept/Wolf Hoffmann
"Up to the Limit" - Accept/Wolf Hoffmann
"Guardian of the Night" - Accept/Wolf Hoffmann
"Princess of the Dawn" - Accept/Wolf Hoffmann
"Through Osiris Etes" - Pagans Mind/Jorn Viggo Lofstat
"Rainbow in the Dark" - Dio/Vivian Campbell
"Crystal Ball" - Yngwie J. Malmsteen
"Icarus Dream Suite opus 4" - Yngwie J. Malmsteen
"Stars" - Hear-n-Aid (the last solo) Donald "Buck" Dharma
"Another Brick in the Wall" - Pink Floyd/David Gilmour
"Lady of the Valley" - White Lion/Vito Bratta

I know I am leaving out some great guitarists and great solos from some of the more poppy 80's bands. Lynch, Demartini, more form Bratta, more from Viv, Bruce Kulick etc.

Really too many to list them all, But the solo I'd consider the most memorable to me is probably the one from Europe's Girl From Lebanon. By far their best song and its guitar works is just stunning awesome!

hahahaha this is one of those posts that are really hard for my burnt out brain to think about because there is an infinate amount of guitar solos since the time of my birth that have affected me the best I can do at the moment is say Criss Oliva He never had a bad solo but His Solos on the Gutter Ballet and Edge of Thorns albums are some of my Favorite solos of all time He had such Power and Emotion and he could Shred! He is one of my biggest if not my biggest influences to play guitar And yes Cliff burton on Orion is Awsome too!!! I love that Whole album it was my first Real Metal album it scared the shit out of me :D

My favorite is :
MEGADETH - The dread and the fugitive mind, because it's got the "feeling" I like

but shredding-gly speaking most of Michael Romeo (symphony X) of sins and shadows is maybe my favorite,

Opeth (not sure if it's Peter or Mikael) - bleak
Evergrey - Watching the skies (the keyboard solo is pretty cool as well)
Stratovarius - (Timo Tolki) Black Diamond
Cacophony - Sword of the warrior (FRIEDMAN AND BECKER!!!!)

....But there are so many that it's impossible to mention them all.

I shouldn't have forgot Dream Theater's "Metropolis Part 1" Half the song is a solo of sorts, but I think that was the best written prog song ever as far as working in different time changes, individual solos etc. without fucking up the song itself. They will never write another one like that. Myung's bass solo at about 5:30 into the song is amazing. Pure prog bliss.

It's hard to mention the best solo, there's so many good. But I like Vai's Passion and Warfare CD. Vai has a very unique style wich I like a lot. He certainly made very good records with all the bands he played with like Alcatrazz. I even like David Lee Roth's "Eat them and Smile" A LOT, just becouse of that sharp guitar work...
