I realised I shouldn't write off Rap completely.

Someone post some lyrics. Prove to me that some rap out there is useful. I'm expecting, because I actually respect old rap. There was a bloody point to it, anti-racism, anti-war etc etc. I don't know if the lyrics are half-good though. SO PROVE IT CHILDREN. And that Arctic Monkeys song is pretty bad lyrically.

Meh, old school rap had cool rhythms and such but the lyrics were still pretty bad in my opinion...try underground rap like Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Apathy. Other than that I can't stand rap, which sucks considering it's really hard not to get exposed to shitty rap nowadays.

Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

And if the snow buries my
My neighborhood

And if my parents are crying,
Then I'll dig a tunnel
From my window to yours
Yeah, a tunnel
From my window to yours

You climb out the chimney
And meet me in the middle
The middle of the town
And since there's no one else around
We let our hair grow long
And forget all we used to know
Then our skin gets thicker
From living out in the cold

You change all the lead
Sleeping in my head
As they day grows dim
I hear you sing a golden hymn

Then, we tried to name our babies
But we forgot all the names that,
The names we used to know
But sometimes,
We remember our bedrooms and our parents bedrooms
And the bedrooms of our friends
Then we think of our parents...
Well, whatever happened to them?!

You change all the lead sleeping in my head to gold
As the day grows dim I hear you sing a golden hymn
It's the song I've been trying to sing...

Purify the colors, purify my mind
Purify the colors, purify my mind
Spread the ashes of the colors
Over this heart of mine!

Arcade Fire - Crown of Love

They say it fades if you let it
Love was made to forget it
I carved your name across my eyelids
You pray for rain, I pray for blindness

If you still want me, please forgive me
The crown of love is not upon me
If you still want me, please forgive me
Because the spark is not within me

I snuffed it out before my mom walked
In my bedroom.
The only thing that you keep changin'
Is your name, my love keeps growin'
Still the same, just like a cancer
And you won't give me a straight answer!

If you still want me, please forgive me
The crown of love has fallen from me
If you still want me, please forgive me
Because your hands are not upon me

I shrugged them off before my mom walked
In my bedroom.
The pains of love, and they keep growin'
In my heart there's flowers growin'
On the grave of our old love,
Since you gave me a straight answer.

If you still want me, please forgive me
The crown of love is not upon me
If you still want me, please forgive me
Because the spark is not within me
It's not within me.
It's not within me.
You gotta be the one, you gotta be the way
Your name is the only word,
The only word that I can say!

The Cure - Disintegration

I miss the kiss of treachery
The shameless kiss of vanity
The soft and the black and the velvety
Up tight against the side of me
And mouth and eyes and heart all bleed
And run in thickening streams of greed
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go
My party piece.

Oh, I miss the kiss of treachery
The aching kiss before I feed
The stench of a love for a younger meat
And the sound that it makes
When it cuts in deep.
The holding up on bended knees
The addiction of duplicities
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go
My party piece.

But I never said I would stay to the end
So I leave you with babies and hoping for frequency
Sceaming like this in the hope of the secrecy
Screaming me over and over and over
I leave you with photographs
Pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and
Stains on the scenery
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both of us knew
How the ending would be...

So it's all come back round to breaking apart again
Breaking apart like I'm made up of glass again
Making it up behind my back again
Holding my breath for the fear of sleep again
Holding it up behind my head my head again
Cut in deep to the heart of the bone again
Round and round and round
It's coming apart again
Over and over and over

Now that I know that I'm breaking to pieces
I'll pull out my heart and I'll feed it to anyone
Crying for sympathy, crocodiles cry
For the love of the crowd and three cheers from everyone
Dropping through sky, through the glass of the roof
Through the roof of your mouth, through the mouth of your eye
Through the eye of the needle, it's easier for me
To get closer to heaven than ever feel whole again.

I never said I would stay to the end
I knew I would leave you with babies and everything
Screaming like this in the hole of sincerity
Screaming me over and over and over
I leave you with photographs
Pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and
Stains on the memory and
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both of us knew
How the end
Always is.

How the end always is...

Joy Division - Isolation

In fear every day, every evening
He calls her aloud from above
Carefully watched for a reason
Painstaking devotion and love
Surrendered to self-preservation
From others who cared for themselves
A blindness that touches perfection
But hurts just like anything else.

Isolation...

Mother I tried please believe me
I'm doing the best that I can
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through
I'm ashamed of the person I am

Isolation...

But if you could just see the beauty
These things I could never describe
These pleasures a wayward distraction
This is my one lucky prize.

Isolation...

Joy Division - Decades

Here are the young men, the weight on their shoulders
Here are the young men, well where have they been?
We knocked on the doors Hell's darker chambers
Pushed to the limit we dragged ourselves in

Watched from the wings as scenes were replaying
We saw ourselves now as we never had seen
Portrayal of the trauma and degeneration
The sorrows we suffered and never were free.

Where have they been?

Weary inside, now our hearts lost forever
Can't replace the fear or the thrill of the chase
Each ritual showed up the door for our wanderings
Open and shut, then slammed in our face.

Where have they been?

The Mars Volta - Cicatriz E.S.P.

Do you recall its name
As it suggested beck and call
This face and heel
Will drag your halo through the mud
Ash of pompei
Erupting in a statues dust
Shrouded in veils
Because these handcuffs hurt to much
Still scalping these ticketless applause
And when they drag the lake there is nothing left at all
suture contusion
beyond the anthills of the dawning of this plague
said I've lost my way
even if this cul de sac would pay
to reach inside a vault whatever be the cost
sterling clear
blackened ice
and when they drag the lake there's nothing left at all

I defected

coveting all you know see and hear
this is my last incision
the stitches have fallen off
Sterling clear blackened ice

Finch - Miro

Slumber has erased me.
Comfort is only skin deep.
A dirty mirror reveals reason.
To digest, corrective medicine.

I burned up, I burned up...
Ablaze upon re-entry, slow down...
I woke up, I woke up...
Face down along the shoreline, paradise is mine.

Shadows, and living trees,
Reach out to embrace me.
This place here is where we don't exist.
He carries dead weight with his fist.

I burned up, I burned up...
Ablaze upon re-entry, slow down...
I woke up, I woke up...
Face down along the shoreline, paradise is mine.

You can take it with you, You can take it with you.
Frame by frame we begin to change skeletons and robot brains.
She found a book thats writes itself, that plays it all upon a stage,
Over and over again, over and over again,
Where is the end?

:puke: to all these lyrics so far.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Pink Floyd, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys, Tom Waits, Billy Bragg, Leonard Cohen, Tool... I could go on and on.

Everything posted so far is either obvious pop crap or pretentious pseudo poetry which makes no sense.

I love Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen...but Tool? Fuck off.

And punk lyrics are boring propaganda, who wants to read that?

Yeah so, The Mars Volta are amazing...have you heard any of the new material?

No. When their new album comes out in January I'm gonna buy it. Great lyrics, although I might get flamed for this they exceed Pink Floyd in some areas.

Shame you didn't listen to Goliath, awesome song, but nevertheless it's noble of you to wait for the album to come out. As for them exceeding Pink Floyd, I don't really think so...lyrically they don't, musically no way...I don't know what else there is. But it's clear that they're highly influenced by Pink Floyd, just listen to Televators and try and tell me that it doesn't remind you of a Floyd song.

I'd say in vocals they do (when Cedric isn't shrieking). Also in being extremely Experimental. Pink Floyd didn't seem to be as adventerous. Also lyrically I think they do in some ways. Like Volta songs make you think when Floyd songs don't.

The vocals are a matter of preference, as for the experimental aspect of their music, you obviously don't listen to Floyd a lot if you think they aren't "adventurous" enough. And lyrically, Pink Floyd are much better than The Mars Volta, not only because what they write is more logical, but because the concepts behind their albums are much more evident in their music. I mean, The Mars Volta are an awesome band but you really have to dig deep to find any meaning in what they write, because it's all washed up in their drug use. It really doesn't make any sense comparing The Mars Volta to Pink Floyd in the first place, considering Pink Floyd already have a legacy and they don't.

Depends which era Tool. Their early stuff is pretty ordinary but'Stinkfist' is lyrically outstanding, as is 'Reflection'.

As for punk lyrics being 'boring propaganda', you are clearly have never listened to any decent punk.

Bad Religion: I Want to Conquer the World

Hey Brother Christian with your high and mighty errand,
Your actions speak so loud, I can't hear a word you're saying.
Hey Sister Bleeding Heart with all of your compassion,
Your labors soothe the hurt but can't assuage temptation.
Hey man of science with your perfect rules of measure,
Can you improve this place with the data that you gather?
Hey Mother Mercy can your loins bear fruit forever?
Is your fecundity a trammel or a treasure?
And I want to conquer the world,
Give all the idiots a brand new religion,
Put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil,
Promote equality in all my decisions
With a quick wink of the eye
And a "God you must be joking!"
Hey Mr. Diplomat with your worldly aspirations,
Did you see the children cry when you left them at the station?
Hey moral soldier you've got righteous proclamation,
And precious tomes to fuel your pulpy conflagrations.
And I want to conquer the world,
Give all the idiots a brand new religion,
Put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil,
Promote equality in all of my decisions
I want to conquer the world,
Expose the culprits and feed them to the children,
I'll do away with air pollution and then all save the whales,
We'll have peace on earth and global communion.
I want to conquer the world!

Bad Religion: Heroes and Martyrs

Amid the heat and the wrack
Hot boots invested and cracked
Poor candidates jacked into gray light
An ultraviolent call summoning both poet and thrall
Sweet catalyst for the acolytes

Our Heroes and Martyrs
present two points of view
(Tell me) Which deity you're praying to?

Into a welter of night
Flack, rounds and roiling blight
Cracked vertebrates stacked by the wayside
An ultraviolent call summoning both poet and thrall
The inveterate blind seeking daylight

Our Heroes and Martyrs
present two points of view
(Tell me) Which deity you're praying to

I've listened to plenty of good punk, hell, I like punk, but the lyrics rarely interest me that much because they're usually intended to make some kind of statement (as in, here is what is fucked up and why) rather than just an expression of emotion that doesn't push it's agenda/morality on you. I guess that's where we differ in opinion in the sense that you find the lyrics interesting and I generally don't. All of the lyrics I posted are songs that have made an emotional impact on me due to the lyrics (although lyrics are always better in the context of a song than on their own). You might say that some punk bands' lyrics have made an impact on you but can you really say that it was an emotional one, like the impact of, to use one of your examples of a great lyricist, a Leonard Cohen song?

I'll grant you that the lyrics to the second song are well written.

That is true, the last sentence. I guess it is all a matter of preference. By the way I do listen to Pink Floyd a lot. I think they are a great band, I'm not saying being adventerous is awesome. Hell some unsigned Experimental bands make themselves sound shitty by being too adventerous. I just think TMV has a stranger sound than Floyd. Thats all. I do like TMV more than Floyd but I do respect Floyd because without them there would be a big chance TMV wouldn't even exist.

I understand your point of view. But I would say two things.

First, yes there are plenty of punk songs that have made an emotional impact on me.

But that's not the really the reason I listen to punk. I can appreciate lyrics which make me think, just as much as those that make me feel sadness, love, happiness, whatever. And for searing social commentary, for me punk is the best genre.

Bands like Born Against, Agaugefor, Conflict, Crass, The Proletariat, Shelter, Thought Riot etc - it''s intelligent political comment.

My favourite political lyricist, though would have to be Jello Biafra because he's just so dripping with cynicism and is a master at making us see the absurdity in our everyday lives. It's made even more potent by his delivery.

Dead Kennedys: "Forest Fire"

No junk food, just earthly goods
I ate weird berries in the woods
Now I'm seeing colors, I'm getting higher
I think I'll start a forest fire

There's a forest fire climbin the hill
Burning wealthy California homes
Better run run run run run run
From the fire

But some of us stay and watch
And we think of your insurance costs
And we laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh
At your lives

Windows covered with bars
Security guards
Is that a house or a fortress?
Against the rest of the world

Windows covered with bars
Security guards
Is that a house or a prison
How you gonna get out?

Electric bull and your tennis courts
Pink sports cars and your boats
Getting fried fried fried fried fried fried
By the fire

Windows covered with bars
Floodlights for the yard
It's a pleasure to watch you
Watch it all melt

But hey!
What about the cocaine
Stockpiled in the basement
Be a hero and save it
You know you're gonna need it

Where's your brand new pretty wife
She might still be inside
Either save her or your cocaine from the fire

But the gates and doors are locked
'Cause the burglar alarms went off
Ever wonder why we laugh laugh laugh
At your lives

Windows covered with bars
Fences spiked with barbed wire
Never looked so helpless
Engulfed in flames

Cameras watchin' the walls
Don't forget the dogs
Now you're trapped in your prison
How you gonna get out

See the gerbil
Run run run run run run run run run
From the fire

 Thats funny, I love it ! I'm a hater of the rich too because I know who earned them their money.

Geoff Tate is my favorite social and policital lyricist and vocalist though they are more impactive in the songs and with his extremely passionate vocal attack

Staying on the subject of fire

Child Of Fire

Born into darkness in Saturn's sight
Riding the night like the wind
Ripping the heart form a world that is right
Treading the borders of sin.

Child of fire
The souls that are damned
By the pain that you bring
Send you higher

Slashing destruction, your right hand sword ringing
To the ends of the earth you will fly
Conquering masses in wonton deception
Blood red your black flag waves high

Child of fire
The souls that are damned
By the pain that you bring send you higher

Look around. Is this the end you've foreseen?
The pain? The misery in us all?
What was it that you knew?
Will we someday learn it too?
And together build another way to the morning?
Will it ever come again?
You've poisoned all our hopes we have nothing now
And what of the children?
What has this done to them?
Damn you for the pain they must feel

The last hero standing no time to turn back
He's listening, waits for your call
The black barren plains reflect hope of the same for only one waiting to
fall.

Child of fire.
The souls that are damned
By the pain that you bring send you higher
Higher. No!

Anybody Listening?

You and I
long to live like the wind upon the water.
If we close our eyes, we'll maybe realize
there's more to life than what we have known.
And I can't believe I've spent so long
living lies I know were wrong inside,
I've just begun to see the light.

Long ago there was a dream,
had to make a choice or two.
Leaving all I loved behind,
for what nobody knew.
Stepped out on the stage, a life
under lights and judging eyes.
Now the applause has died and I
can dream again...

Is there anybody listening?
Is there anyone that sees what's going on?
Read between the lines,
criticize the words they're selling.
Think for yourself and feel the walls
become sand beneath your feet

Feel the breeze?
Time's so near you can almost taste the freedom.
There's a warm wind from the south.
Hoist the sail and we'll be gone,
by morning this will all seem like a dream.
And if you don't return to sing the song,
maybe just as well.
I've seen the news and there's
not much I can do...alone

Is there anybody listening?
Is there anyone who smiles without a mask?
What's behind the words--images
they know will please us?
I'll take what's real. Bring up the lights.

Is there anybody listening?
Is there anyone that sees what's going on?
Read between the lines,
criticize the words they're selling.
Think for yourself and feel the walls...
become sand beneath your feet.

I like lyrics that make me giggle and intrigue me at the same time:

Samantha Fox (Glamour model from the 80s and 90s)

Touch Me

Full moon in the city
And the night was young
I was hungry for love
I was hungry for fun

I was hunting you down
And I was the bait

When I saw you there
I didn’t mean to hesitate

This is the night
This is the night
This is the time we’ve got to get it right

(this is the night)
Touch me, touch me
I want to feel your body
Your heart beat next to mine
(this is the night)
Touch me, touch me now

Quick as a flash you disappeared into the night
Did I hurt you boy?
Didn’t I treat you right?
You made me feel so good
Made me feel myself
Now I’m alone & you’re with somebody else

This is the night, yeah
This is the night
This is the time we’ve got to get it right

(this is the night)
Touch me, touch me
I want to feel your body
Your heart beat next to mine
(this is the night)
Touch me, touch me now
Touch me, touch me now
Touch me, touch me now

Hot & cold emotions confusing my brain
I could not decide between pleasure & pain
Like a tramp in the night
I was begging you
To treat my body like you wanted to

Uh....
Uh, it’s begging for you

(this is the night)
Touch me, touch me
I want to feel your body
Your heart beat next to mine
(this is the night)
’cos I want your body all the time

(this is the night)
Touch me, touch me
I want to feel your body
Your heart beat next to mine
(this is the night)
’cos I want your body all the time

Touch Me
Maybe not good but hilarious.

Also Darling Nikki by Prince :p

The best bits are the orgasms haha. I don't really care for communistic claimings of representing the majority or retard politics in music. I like lyrics that are kind of fantasy/ horror etc not really stuff about current affairs.I suppose I might like serious lyrics if I had heard some that were saying I actually strongly agreed with.

Hmm maybe 51st state by new model army hehe. Depends what mood I'm in.

I remember that song, but fuck songs are so cliche and a dime a dozen. Depends on where you stand in the economics of society whether you feel political statements are retarded or not. Myself I feel not making any stand is retarded.

oh yea, and the best bits are not the orgasms, its the total experience..........
