Favourite (or otherwise) destinations

I haven't travelled to that many *different* places, really. Lots of airports, but never been out of most of them :)

Best: Paris. Really cool vibe and a great walking city. Wouldn't mind spending a few days there just strolling about; might enjoy it even more if I spoke the lingo! I also liked Mainz in Germany, as well as the Isle of Rügen (like a German Isle of Wight, another of my fave places).

Worst: I want to say Berlin, as I did see some scummy parts, but since living in London they've been put into perspective; they were no worse than Croydon really, i.e. dirty suburban districts like in any big city. Newport in Wales was rather shite, Brandenburg in Germany a bit crap.

I need to go to more countries!

Yeah a lot can depend on where you end up in a city. I stayed in Croydon once for a few days, and its redeeming feature is that it's a train ride away from lots of cool stuff! London's awesome (I'm sure you can name lots of bad sides to it though!).

A few people I know have raved about Berlin. I've not been to Germany, even though I've wanted to since I started German in year 7. Was on my way to Hamburg once, but nobody would pick me up from the hitchiking place in Amsterdam, so I cracked the shits and went back to England. Fail.

I hear Hawaii has become very expensive. Was that your experience, phlog?

What was good about Alkmaar? I never would have thought to go there! Once you start travelling a bit, there's no end to it. So many places to see, so little time and money.

Berlin was great, but I wish I'd only gone there for one day (the second day was spent in the shitty shopping district part); if you have the chance to go, certainly do!

I really want to go to the states next; if I could, I'd like to spend 3-4 months just driving from state to state. Mind you, I'd also like to do that in Oz.

Well it was just kind of random how we ended up there. We were doing our tour with Megadeth back in 2005 and we had some friends who our old bassist Glenn met online that said we could crash with them when we played Holland and they'd be able to help us out with getting around, etc. The show was in Amsterdam but they said they lived not too far out of town in a place called Alkmaar, so we thought "Why not?"

Turned out that it was just an awesome town, great friendly people, beautiful surrounding countryside, great food, markets, an awesome metal club called "Neon Knights" (sadly now closed) that gave us uber cheap drinks and the staff got wasted with us... it was just really cool. Close enough to Amsterdam to be convenient, far enough out to be relaxed. If I was moving anywhere else in the world, it would be there - seriously.

Those friends of Glenn's that we randomly decided to stay with are some of my best friends now, so it was a positive stay all round. :)

The smaller towns of Japan.

Nozawa and Appi being the best. Man, the hospitality is just out of this world. We stayed in pensions, which are effectively people renting out their spare rooms to holiday makers and they just look after everything for you. Homecooked meals, they'll drive wherever you want, once you get out of the cities the whole country just takes on a different complexion. No hustle and bustle, everything is quiet, quaint and done with a minimum of fuss. Love it. I'm going back again Feb and staying with some of the people I stayed with earlier this year. I can only do 3 weeks this time alas.

The cities in Japan are just insane, words cannot describe some of the weird shit that goes on there.

In terms of pure prettiness though, I'd have to say the Wanaka area of NZ has it for me, plus it has incredible fishing to boot.

Locally, I'm on a bit of an upper clyde river binge at the moment.

That was my problem with Hawaii. Too American. I can't think what actual America would be like.

There are specific places in the States that I wouldn't mind going to, but if I was going to a country as such, it wouldn't be America.

I'm going to go against what most people said here. I hated Paris, the whole place smelt bad, the metro system was a joke and the people were rude. Todds right about Prague, if you go near the astronomical clock you will get lots of dealers and women with short skirts wanting your business. Ferret and I honestly had 7 dealers come up to us, we almost got into a bit of trouble when they would come up to us and we would mess with them. Them "skunk Hash cocaine" Us "nah i'm all out at the moment but I could probably get you some stuff later". But the awesome side to Prague, which Todd probably wouldn't appreciate, the beer is damn nice and soooooooo cheap. The cheapest bottle would cost like $0.60au off the shelf, also the hostels are cheap. I found an awesome one for 5 euros a night with free breakfast a volley ball caught free internet etc.

Besides from Prague being awesome, id say Switzerland in general is awesome expecially around interlaken. Tolmin Slovenia is really nice, anyone into metal should definitely go to metalcamp it owns Wacken hard! Sweden is an awesome country and Queenstown New zealand is pretty damn awesome

I think the Paris metro (like that in most other cities) is amazing. I love it. When I first went to Paris, I arrived on a Sunday morning, and it was putrid. The streets stank of urine, I actually saw human feces on the ground, empty wine bottles littered the streets, etc. Thankfully, I have been back many times since, enough for my overall opinion to be fairly well rounded.

I spent a week in Paris at Christmas 06 and didn't notice any strange smells or excess (any) excrement. I never found the people to be rude either, but maybe that's because I tried to speak the lingo.

Never had a problem with Prague, but I only spent two days there. Loved the place.

haha you're right, the cheap beer had no sway for me. As a side note... we stopped off at a cafe for lunch, the guys order three beers... I ordered two cokes. Guess which was cheaper?

I'd go back to Prague (I really wanted to check out more of the Castle) but it's not a city I'd want to spend a night on the town in haha

Fairy nuff! It's not a cheap activity and if you're not particularly driven to do it you're better off spending your dosh on other things.

I never had anyone dodgy approach me in Prague, perhaps because I was with the missus, or perhaps because it was below freezing. Had a great time there.

I thought the Paris metro was great! Wasn't easy carting a suitcase up and down the stairs though.

I fell left out, never been overseas, never really seen a good reason for it

I haven't been OS in years and that was a trip that I barely remember because it was work related.

before that, last place went was New Zealand in 94.

but travelling around Oz, have to say that one of my favourite places is Mount Gambia in South Australia and the area between there and Port McDonald.
the NSW South Coast is also great and used to love travelling along it, especially all the way down to Eden.
The costal areas of WA are nice too, Albany and Esperance, and up the North west Coast too. Fremantle is wonderful.

worse places: Sydney, despise the place.
but not as much as I do the Gold Coast.
fucking shitehole.
had to work on and off there for a long time and really wanted to wash my skin in acid every time I got home.

I have to agree on your GC comments - the view is great, but it's just a shitehole as you said

One day I'll have the time (and funds) to travel through Australia properly.

BTW, going to Edinburgh this weekend. Finally seeing more of the country I've lived in for 7.5 years  :headbang:
