Finntroll...

Out of curiosity (and this is to all who read it)... what is "Folk" actually anyway? I thought it was along the lines of "Organic"... like specifically influenced by the country or area of origin. Like a nordic region band with viking lyrical content. Am I wrong? If not, "Folk" would by definition have a completely meaning depending on the origin of the band that plays the music.... I think.

Having been listening to folk-metal for a while, I'd say its only folk cause of the use of traditional/folk-ish themes (mainly for the lyrics), i.e. ballads, legends, myths, often pagan, but not necessairily of the region where the band comes from, and some traditional instruments. Somehow the term "World Music" stuck to that arabic pop-clutter on BBC or Mama-Africa themes. Such a shame people rarely associate it with European Folk music.

Some bands only stick to guitars-bass-drums anyway, others, more "extreme" ones, like Turisas (Finnish) or In Extremo (German) are just a bunch of hairy men, dressed-up in furs and stained with fake blood, the latter playing some mad instruments like horns, bagpipes, drums of all kind, lutes and whatever else you may think of.

If you want listen to something non-metal, check out this song by Norwegian band Folque, they've been around since 70's, but already disbanded. Simle, but nice, lyrics are in Old-Norwegian, I believe, based on some sort of legend bout two sisters, love and murder, all that stuff.

Just wanted to also chime in that Finntroll rocks. Would love to see them. Actually, I've always wanted to see a big Flogging Molly/the Pogues/Oysterband/Finntroll superjam. That would be the shit.

Everybody who likes Finntroll should seriously check out Equilibrium from Germany. Their 2005 debut album, which is called Turis Fratyr, just blew me away. I can't stop listening to it. So, if you have nothing against German lyrics, give it a try! :kickass:

I am in love with Finntroll. A friend of mine told me I should check them out so I picked up Nattfodd...and WOW! I had never heard anything like it up until that point. They are wholly fresh, original, and addictive! To all those who think I am an elitist, Finntroll just goes to show how good a band can be even with simplistic musicianship (with the exception of their stellar keyboardist).

Now for them to haul their big, Finnish asses over to Las Vegas for a show! Trollhammeren!

Ok, then.

Out.

edit: Fixed "Different"... now that sentence/paragraph might make sense.... Guess the hands and the brain were not working together again...Sorry.

That's fucked up.

29.01.2006 Bye, and thanks for all the fish...
With a heavy heart I bring you the following news: In a band meeting one hour ago I was fired as a singer of Finntroll. Reasons are many and for the most part private, but personal differences and lack of discussion have led my bandmates to doubt my commitment for this band. I believe this will be discussed widely in the following days and more info will undoubtedly be out soon for your viewing pleasure. I will only say the following: These past three years have been the best times of my life and I want to thank all the friends I've gained from this, crews past and present, supporters who came to our shows and shared the good and the bad times. I will always cherish you in my heart. Thanks for my now ex-bandmates for sharing this experience with me. Life goes on and wounds will heal. The future remains to be seen.

Thank all of you and see you sometime, somewhere.
