First album you owned?

Tonight's the Night is one of the most heartbreaking, emotionally charged records I've ever heard. They recorded it in basically one night, live, and drunk. It's about a friend of his who died (I can't remember the whole story). It's a fantastic album.

I'd recommend staying away from his new stuff if you're just getting into him. The list Omni gave is actually pretty good, it looks like.

Most of his music from the start of his solo career until the late 80's is good, barring the albums designed to piss off bad record labels. He still does fairly good work, but those are the classics.

I think the first album I ever owned was called Goofy Greats. It was a compilation of goofy old songs from the 50's or whatever. Stuff like Boney Maronie, Snoopy vs the Red Baron, Ma-nah ma-nah, Mule Skinner Blues, etc. I loved that record. I was like probably 8 years old, and it was about 1975.
