First band to do Death Metal Growls?

Don't forget about Insanity who were a lot more extreme than say Possessed. No one ever mentions them with some of the other early death metal acts.

CELTIC FROST was the first band to incorporate what would eventually become your typical death metal vocal.

My girlfriend asked me who the first band to do the low death metal singing and I actually have no idea. Anyone want to help me out? I figure Slayer was the first to really yell but they weren't really growly and low, just yells.

Thanks!

Setting the record straight, especially w/regards to the Morbid Angel/Death argument, here are the years of the first releases of some of the death metal pioneers. I mean, these bands could have been playing in their garages since 1860 for all I know, but I don't think that really should count?

Death - Scream Bloody Gore - 1987
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness - 1989
Sepultura - Morbid Visions - 1986
Possessed - Seven Churches - 1985 (demo released in 1984)
Repulsion - Under various names, released their first demo in 1984, but first official album release was not until 1989
Carcass - Reek of Putrafecation - 1988
Napalm Death - SCUM - 1987 (couple of demos earlier)
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales - 1984

Death had about a billion demos before Scream Bloody Gore, as did many other bands you mentioned.

Yes, they did. But, where do you draw the line? Is something they made in their garage when they were 9 years old on a beat up old cassette and gave to their friends a "demo"? That does not really help the question of who did it "first". Thought the question would be more clearly answered by focusing on the official releases.

Post by Arsenic on M-A:

Kam Lee is the master of the death growl, especially with the style he perfected on the Massacre demos. The early Death demos that feature Kam (Reign Of Terror in particular) are definitley pioneering in the vocal field.

Possessed are one of the first too of course.

Poison from Germany are certainly overlooked, check out the Sons Of Evil demo for Virgin Slaughter's sick death vox.

Xecutioner (pre-Obituary) 1986 demo.

Troy Dixler of Chicago's Devastation intentionally used a growl style too.

Genocide/Repulsion and early Sepultura. Warhammer (U.K.) have proto-"growl vocals". Insanity from the Bay Area also had some hellish vocals too. Ahh, how could I forget the psychos Tschoesi from Messiah and Killjoy from Necrophagia !

Fuck, I might as well let loose- Sarcofago, Nuclear Death, Voor, Vulcano, Samhain (Dnk.), Death Strike/Master. This is all pre-87 anyway BUT from 1987 PARABELLUM. Unbelievable vocals. Majesty (L.A.), Azagthoth (U.K.) (this is more influenced by Napalm Death's vocals). These all being from the metal side of things anyway.

The book "Choosing Death" said that Posessed was the first Death Metal band. I think they dated back to 82 or something and a song of there's called "Death Metal" was what created the genres name.

Sarcofago is really extreme musically, vocally for when there first cd came out. The vocals are fucking great. I think their first cd was 81,82 or something.

Uhhh...Sepultura, anyone?

Ummmm.... been mentioned a couple of times.

Finally someone mentioned Nuclear Death!! They RULE. Easily the nastiest, most vile, repellent metal ever produced.

Possesed, Death, Necrophagia, Sepultura and wasn't there a band in Sweden
that had death metal vocals in the mid to late 80's I heard they were a huge
influence on Entombed and other Scandanavian death metal bands it was not
Bathory.
