First Cubase 5 mix - Nick Crow 8505/Gearbox

sounds amazing splatt, what did u use for the bas guitar?
And did you use a little audio pitch in cubase 5?(i have cubase 5 now also,i think its great)

:OMG:

These Guitars are awesome.

splat , have you tried the nebula 2 progs on guitars ?
i will try those with solo c and 8510!

nice one!!!

haha, fuckin hell this sounds stunning, every time i hear i just love this tune, compliment your singer as well man, what a voice.

The whole mix just works out and there is nothing i dont like about it, im not sure if i like the crow guitar tones better then the POD tones, but this is just great sounding Matt.

Thanks Bob! As you well know, once you get a sound that works, its hard to switch to another sim or even micing a real cab once you've gotten used to a particular sound. I'm liking the mixture of the 8505 and Gearbox so far though. Tomorrow may yield a different result though!

I really like the second mix. The guitars sound wonderful. Your singer isas quite talented and sounds a little like Maynard mixed with Vinny Kavanaugh from Anathema with a twist.

Thanks! Its crazy how many people are saying that Matty sounds like Maynard! Tool was not really an influence on either of us, but I do love Tool and to be compared to Maynard is a major compliment!

Criticisms:
I would automate the whole mix more. The clean guitars in the beginning/the whole intro section has more energy than when the distorted guitars come in. You could even just automate the master bus fader up and down a db in these sections.

I think what's happening is the clean guitar parts of the song are not even causing any gain reduction on the master buss, but when the heavy part comes in, its getting reduced 3 to 4dbs, making it seem smaller in comparison. I may automate the compression to compensate, or hell, just take it off if its causing problems!

I will have to go with THESE GUITARS KICK ASS SPLAT! I like this better than the pod personally. A little more raw. Awesome mix splat huge sounding...drums kik arse!

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like it.

Bass guitar was a Fender P Bass with a Duncan Quarter Pounder pup into two instances of Gearbox. One for the main bass, and another for the distorted bass, highpassed at 800hz and lowpassed at 2500hz.

On this track I actually programmed a sub bass line in Cubase which is triggering a Reason subtractor bass patch. I found this to work a little and saturate the bass a little better than using a third bass track that's lowpassed to contain only the bass sub information.

Thanks Dan! Yes I have tried Nebula and I like it a lot. I stopped using it strictly due to convenience as it took more CPU, not because of sound quality. I may give it another go when I upgrade my PC, but for now I'm digging this setup. The 8505 and Soldano VSTs rule. I can't believe they are free. I may drop Nick Crow a couple of bucks for his efforts.

hey splatt, could you upload the vmx files (i have cubase 5 as well)
for the bass ?

i totally would love to get a similar sound on a band i'm working on,
this would be a great starting point!

thanks mate!

Sure dude, here they are. Very important - don't adjust the volume on the bass bottom channel because the limiter plugin is POST FADER. So if you need to make volume changes, you'll need to output it to a bus or something. The bottom and top channels should be routed to their own group anyway and it has a 3db 1.0Q boost at 50hz.

The input volume of your bass will need to be adjusted to work with the patch. The bass bottom patch should sound pretty clean, just at the point of breakup, so adjust the input in Cubase accordingly. I automate the input gain (not output) to the bass distortion patch. A low signal is going in on the clean parts, where its at normal volume on the heavy parts. I just drag the volume on the wave form (see .jpg to match where my input volumes are set) until it sounds right. Also note where the output peaks are in the image.

Most important, I have a Curve EQ on the bass bottom. It will probably not match your bass at all. Open Curve EQ, hit the "M" button for matching and just bang away on a low B note and capture that spectrum. That's all I did.
Enjoy!

matt, thank you very very much!

i will try this tomorrow!

maybe in comination with my diezel and nebula!

Awesome bass sound.

Can you post Gearbox patches and details on Reaktor's Subtractor processing?

That is GREAT! What kind of distro are you guys planning for? Any chance of iTunes release? :D I want to get a copy ASAP.

I just finished another version with completed ambient effects and accoutrements. I also bussed the bass guitar and kick out to a group and limited it a lot, and brought that fader ever so slightly into the mix. That seems to give it a lot of glue in the bottom end that I was trying to fix with mix bus compression. This is the same as the third link in the original post.

Dude - I have been listening to this non-stop. I would buy this if I heard it on the radio FO SHO! ;)

Dude - I checked on your MySpace, and it says you're influenced ny Big Wreck!! I thought I was the only person in the world who knew them!! EXCELLENT BAND!!!!!

Sorry dude, I'm liking your other mixes a lot more. The bass on this is unbelievable, and the vocals sound really good. But the drums are sounding a lot smaller, toms are getting buried, and I think the guitars are too tight on the palm mutes for your style.

Good song but I think I prefer your previous mixes (not comparing them though, just by memory, the individual parts of the other ones sounded better. THis one may gel better tho).
