So, I finally went through and mic'd up an amp. No virtual crap, just my amp, an AKG D 1000E mic with an SM 58 capsule, and some EQ.

Here's what I got:

It's a lot clearer than anything I've been able to get with a VST amp sim, and I'm really happy with the results... but that doesn't mean there isn't any room for improvement. What ya'll think?

Edit: Gotta say, guitars sounded better on the studio monitors. Oh well, I'll drop some more bottom end on the tone when I'm in the studio again. Or maybe some bass guitar will fill it out enough?

There is no "guitar tone" without bass.

And unfortunately there is never a bass guitar available to use. I'm trying to find a way to get some bass tracks. Gonna mess around with a couple VSTi's for a bit, see if that will work well enough.

Okay, I went through and re-recorded the guitar parts, and added some bass using a VSTi. The bass isn't the best, but it helps fill out the bottom end.

The melodic parts are double tracked, the breakdown quad tracked. I'm going to quad track the melodic parts as well, but I'm hella tired and am going to get some sleep first.

Guitar is a Schecter C1+, amp is a Behringer V-Ampire 2x10 combo amp.

Regardless of the fact that your amp is a behringer, I LOVED the huge amount of mids on the first clip. Sounded raw as fuck without being too honky.

I boost the hell out of my mids on the amp pretty much 90% of the time. Unfortunately, I'm unable to reproduce the fullness of the amp without doing some major cutting of the mids in reaper (even after I put my mids at 50% on the amp, which takes away from the mid heavy character I like). I'm getting a lot of fizz when I mic up the amp, and taming that fizz is proving to be a hassle. I think I'm on my way there. I have a 2x2 foot piece of carpet covering the back of the amp now, which closes it of a bit, cutting a lot of the fizz I've been experiencing.

Mic position is half between the dust cap and cone of the speaker, a little under two inches away. The amp itself is on a rather solid table, with the front of the amp right on the edge.

Edit: Did a whole new recording, and it's quad tracked all the way through. The playing is also much tighter. Still working on getting everything settled mix wise. I'm not sure why the breakdown is coming out so muddy. I'm going to try and see if using a multiband compressor to tighten up the mids will help with the overall mix.

If anyone has some suggestions, I'd like to hear em'. This thing is frustrating me.
