Davvero bravi questi francesi, praticamente degli sconosciuti, ma il loro debutto, “Inhale The Sacred Poison” si candida a diventare una delle sorprese più gradite del 2011.
Un lavoro maturo, pensato bene, curato nel minimo dettaglio: accade raramente nei debutti.
I Folge Dem Wind sanno già cosa vogliono; sanno come suonare, sanno cosa suonare.
Tentano di fare una musica originale, varia e, in parte, ci riescono, dato che “Inhale the Sacred Poison” è un disco pieno di sfumature diverse, ma non riescono a “mascherare” del tutto l’evidenza che si tratta di una band acerba, nel quale sound, emergono chiaramente quali sono le loro influenze. Si definiscono “pagan black metal”; lo sono, sicuramente per i testi, incentrati sulla natura e sull’antichità. A livello musicale non seguono la linea dei connazionali Belenos, ma sono più improntati sul black metal grezzo ed il suono scandinavo più moderno. Quindi partono da una base black metal classica per poi spaziare verso un sound più elaborato e moderno: Ved Buens Ende, primi Primordial, Lugubrum e Solefald sono le principali influenze.
Curiosi sono gli innesti jazz che talvolta compaiono fra le note di questo disco, come sono particolari gli arrangiamenti simil thrash (vedi “Awakening in Unity”) che talvolta vengono utilizzati dalla band.
La melodia, nella loro musica è importante, ma è inserita sempre in un contesto melanconico, aggressivo e graffiante. Certamente, in canzoni così articolate e lunghe, se non ci fossero stati i numerosi fraseggi melodici, la loro musica avrebbe rischiato di essere troppo statica.
I Folge Dem Wind sono ambiziosi, ma devono ancora maturare, per poter compiere il definitivo salto di qualità. Questo non è infatti un disco per tutti, perché le canzoni non sono immediate, ma lunghe e introspettive: manca quel pizzico di malizia che permette ai grandi artisti di mantenere alto l’interesse di chi ascolta per tutta la durata del pezzo, anche se lunghissimo.
Come debutto è un disco sorprendente, fatto veramente bene, con alcuni picchi compositivi confortanti. Meritano certamente un ascolto.

I would have to admit now that, France has become a forge for talented black metal bands; there is no use to deny the evidence, but Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, Alcest, Pensees Nocturne, Les Discrets (and thousands of others) all come from the country of the much hated cousins and even today I have to surrender before the clear superiority of those Folge Dem Wind and place them among the most talented bands from across the Alps. After having done this large introduction, I can also say that I have been following the quintet coming from the unknown Montgeron, since their debut EP, "Hail the Pagan Age", and since then the band have struck me for their dark and evil sound, which thus emerged more strongly in the first official release, but in my opinion, only with this remarkable "The Sacred Inhale Poison” reaches the peak of genius. And they do so from the beginning with the morbid title track which mounts through black sounds, avant-garde and psychotic influences, throws us into a whirlwind of insane madness with its 7 minutes and continues. With the following "... Of Blood & Ether", their music, while revealing the very dark black roots, leads us to walk through territory which is difficult to be explored by black groups. For sure we're not in front of the schizoid proposal of the Norwegian Fleurety or in front of the disruptive class of the aforementioned Deathspell Omega, but honestly some harmonic choices, some rhythmical dissonances, the constant presence of murky atmosphere (listen to "Grey Behind the Veil") and the search for intimate fragments, they merely confirm their enormous potential. We've already mentioned the third track, but I would to cite to you the wonderful prologue that has certainly little to do with metal music (who mentioned Jazz?) and this is precisely the winning point of Folge Dem Wind: they savagely attack us with their ruthless guitar riffs clearly of Nordic black origin and then in the complicated gait of the song, they know how to drive in the dark mazes of their sick mind, with accomplices also the heartrending vocals of Kilvaras. I want to make a further introduction to you: "The Sacred Inhale Poison" is not a work of immediate assimilation, you will definitely need various diverse hearings to be able to assimilate it, to be able to appreciate it, but when your ears will get used to it, it will be very difficult to do without it, because it has that quid, the characteristic that only big band capable of daring what no one else dares, able to create something lasting and I am convinced that they have these features. Exceptional song "…Of Reptilian Fires", that in itself, contains all the refined elegance of brutality and experimentation, and the ineffable simplicity in handling long pieces with great ease. The release spins with pleasure between dazed guitar lines, inhuman scream, post metal inserts, fragments of crazy jazz, becoming the joy of those who, like me, are in constant and frantic search of sounds beyond the common and those like the ones by Folge Dem Wind, surely contain something magical, esoteric, dreamy and deeply evil. Seducing!

Devenu plus rare sur les affiches parisiennes, Folge Dem Wind n'en est pas moins actif. Si le groupe a tendance à prendre son temps, il s'est seulement écoulé deux ans entre Thus Echoes the earth et leur second album. De l'autoproduction, le groupe est désormais signé chez Code666, ce qui ne change hélas pas grand-chose pour eux en France puisqu'ils doivent assurer seuls leur promotion dans la mère-patrie. Grand seigneur, le label se charge tout de même d'envoyer les mp3. Un contrat en poche ne signifie évidemment pas qu'on ne doive pas tenir son groupe à bout de bras. Mais ce genre de grande classe doit donner envie de rester en autoprod.

Cette chronique a été pondue au forceps, sachez-le. Les Franciliens se sont largement éloignés du black/pagan de leurs débuts pour s'orienter sur un metal poisseux et plus onirique. Depuis mes premières écoutes, Folge Dem Wind me tiraille. Pas très vivace concernant les mp3 balourdés par le courageux label, j'ai ensuite dû laisser reposer cet album pour y revenir, histoire de confronter mes premières sensations avec un certain recul. Parce que deux choses se confrontent dans mon esprit: 1) je n'aime pas cet album 2) Folge Dem Wind balance ici un gros truc. Ouais, chaud là. Essayons de clarifier tout ça.

Le groupe francilien livre un opus constitué essentiellement de longs développements, de mises en place qui prennent leur temps et demandent à l'auditeur de se laisser porter par la vague. Le feeling insufflés à quelques notes, un plan qui s'écoule perturbé par quelques notes des autres instruments, un chuchotement ou un hurlement. Il n'en faut souvent guère plus. A ce titre, Folge Dem Wind m'emmerde un peu, enfonçant juste un peu le clou par rapport aux innombrables sorties de groupes introspectifs. Le premier titre, "Inhale the Sacred Poison", me donne l'impression d'être une intro étirée sur 14 minutes. La suite ne décolle pas beaucoup plus, collée au bitume à coups de mid-tempos. J'ai beau tenter d'y revenir, Inhale... laisse de marbre le bourrin qui sommeille en moi.

Et pourtant, on sent vraiment que le groupe livre là un effort complètement personnel, on a l'impression d'être en pleine création avec eux, vivant la lente juxtaposition de riffs qui donneront naissance à des compositions démonstratrices des émois des musiciens. Le groupe ose également l'insertion de parties atmosphériques aussi surprenantes que réussies. Je pense notamment à l'arpège sucré de "Behind the Grey Veil" puis l'intervention de saxophone, qui donne une coloration jazzy au final du titre. Même pour un détracteur, difficile de ne pas noter et apprécier cet affranchissement assumé des frontières musicales. Folge Dem Wind ose et ça passe.

De la production, on sait peu de choses. Le label a mis l'accent sur le mastering de Tom Kvålsvoll dans son Strype Audio (la moitié de la scène black norvégienne est passée dans ses griffes). Dommage que le PDF promo ne parle pas de l'enregistrement et du mixage qui sont le beau tour de force de l'album. donc, de la prod, je peux juste vous dire qu'elle est bien meilleure que celle du premier opus, la grosse caisse ayant cessé son pilonnage au premier plan. Le mixage est bon, laissant percer chaque instrument ainsi que les nombreuses variations de voix.

Je ne suis pas client des groupes qui manquent de mordant, et là Folge Dem Wind reste trop en retrait pour moi, n'explosant qu'à de rares occasions. Par contre, je reste fan des groupes qui posent leur zizi sur la table, exposant leur intimité à la vue des convives d'un repas trop ritualisé. Et je pense sincèrement que Folge Dem Wind s'est sorti les tripes pour cet album, ce qui ravira les auditeurs sensibles à la marque que laisse un groupe sur ses pistes. Inhale the Sacred Poison est réservé aux curieux qui aiment flâner. Ceux qui veulent de l'immédiat pré-chié dans une boîte sont priés d'aller voir ailleurs.
