But, I had to get this out of my system. It came in the mail this morning. Certainly brightened my day.

First off, I loved it, I thought it was great... my first band DVD to own. It's great to relive seeing them live.

Just a few things that kind of irked me throughout it... I'm sorry if it was mentioned before, but I looked through the past couple of threads and couldn't find people talking about this:

Again, I love opeth and all that, and I'm surely thankful for this chance to own their DVD, but the editing really bothered me. First off, I thought there were way too many EXTREME closeups on Mikael... so much so that you can see his shaved nose hairs and boogers, and it seemed like the shots were just sort of circled through randomly without any regard for what was happening in the song.

Which leads me to this point I can't get over with. Why the fuck is almost every solo not shown? Any time Mikael or Peter get to a key moment in the song, the camera doesn't stay on them longer than 2 or 3 seconds. I mean, even when the rest of the band stops and it's just Mikael soloing, it'll cut to peter doing absolutey nothing or playing the backing while Mike's wailing away. I don't know if it's just because I'm a guitar player, but watching their fingers fly as they do those amazing parts is one of the most satisfying elements of watching them. Not to mention seeing Mikael hit those bluesy notes really nicely. I also noticed some of the cool drum parts cut away so you never really see them done. I just wish that they stuck the camera on whichever person was doing a badass part instead of just cycling through the shots with a seemingly preordained time to spend on each one, regardless of who is doing what.

I felt like a lot of the angles were kind of cheesy, and focused too much on their faces and not what they were playing. Or when they were on what they were playing, it's in some like crazy angle from the side with super-zoom on.

Also, one last thing... the lighting seemed funky... too much green or something.

I know it may seem like I didn't like it by what I said, but really, it's the most exciting thing I've received recently, and I love it to death. It was well worth every dollar. I could go on and on praising it and saying how great it was, but more than enough people already have, and it would seem redundant. So, forgive me for creating a new thread just to tell you all this, but I needed to get this off my chest. Thanks.

For the most part i agree with the editting. I recently purchased Death's Live In LA DVD, and i found that to be a bit more pleasing in that area. The guitarist doing the solo got the camera, it showed Richard doing some cool drum parts, and Scott got some cool footage as well.
I don't think i missed it as much as you with the Opeth DVD though. I mean, sure it might have made it a bit nicer, but in the end, the sound was perfect, the lighting i thought was really cool, and yeah i don't think it takes away from it too much. It might have been cool to see a bit more solo footage or something, but it doesn't really bother me.
It's good to see you still enjoy it though.
Happy watching!

I just got mine, and I was thinking about people's complaints about that, and I really didn't see it. They didn't show the whole solos much, but they usually cut to them for a significant amount of time. I might care if I was a guitar player and wanted to see exactly how they were played, but most of them are in the documentary anyway.

I have to say it delivers on all points. Most of my other music DVDs have one or two things wrong with them; with this one the sound, editing, performance, crowd, camerawork, and extras are all great. Well, extra, singular, but it's a hell of one. I guess the only non-ideal thing is the setlist, but I'm ok with it.

Bah, who cares about the camera shots. The live performance is great and the documentary is great. I will be watching this dvd over and over throughout the years.

I could do without the punters making goat horns during the mellow set, but besides a few distracting audience shots, the editing was ok by me. I don't have a lot of band videos to compare, but the production values seemed top-drawer. Still annoyed at Music for Nations for not securing the back catalogue rights (unless there's mitigating circumstances so extreme to force me to actually sympathize with a record company) but otherwise all involved delivered a helluva product. The video quality way better than Dark Tranquility, and editing and sound WAY better then Rush in Rio. Maybe someday they're film a whole tour like Kreator's DVD.

I do agree a couple of the nose-porn shots were a bit too hardcore.
