FUCK YES HE DID IT!!!!!

I gotta be honest here. I haven't really said much of anything on these boards as far as politics go, but I really truly sincerely feel that Obama is just a massive, massive bag of hot air. He is an eloquent speaker, and he has an impressive knack for putting inspiring sentiments into a clear language that really strike a lot of people in a meaningful way (that's how he won), but I think that's basically all he is. I am unimpressed. I also was never stoked about Palin, but I think it's pretty ridiculous to hear people yell about her lack of foreign policy experience, or about her lack of experience in general. I don't think she is amazingly qualified for president (candidates generally aren't, because they have never been the president before), but she has been both a mayor and a governor and thus has actually been in charge of a pretty substantial piece of governement, whereas Obama has never had that kind of experience at all. That counts for something in my book. And no one has explained to me how Obama is somehow any more qualified in foreign policy than she is. What, he casts votes in the Senate? Obama is a good orator and somehow convinced the masses that he knows what foreign policy is all about, but I see very little to no basis for anyone to claim that he is definitely more qualified than an alternative candidate. When you strip away his cool mood and suave speeches (which are not bad things so much, but don't strike me as being definitive presidential attributes), he doesn't have a lot of appeal. McCain on the other hand, is unarguably a war hero and the guy is just obsessed with his country. When he gets fired up about something (and the media tries to talk about how it's a negative thing), it comes across to me as more of a positive thing- like he actually knows what he's talking about and has real feelings that he isn't afraid to show. I just don't see how a guy like him could possibly abuse presidential powers or make shortsighted decisions about wars or do something to compromise his servitude towards his country that he holds so dearly- that kind of behavior would be the ultimate mistake in his eyes. When all the campaigning and media influence and all the meaningless crap is taken out of the equation, why would we vote for someone who mainly is just a good orator, when the alternative is a war hero who is obsessed with his country? I really just kind of feel like America is getting what it deserves- people who unadmittedly or even unknowingly care more about superficiality than they do about substance. I feel like that is the state of the country, and I am skeptical that Obama will be a fantastic leader.

Hopefully I am wrong.

I also don't really like the whole Democratic idea that big government is better. There are so many instances where a big government is worse. And why should the government have the authority to tell me what kind of guns I can and can't own? I'm all for background checks and making sure guns are only in the right hands, but the gun laws that Obama is going to enact are uninformed and stupid. I'm gonna have to snatch up a couple guns I've been eyeballing before Obama makes it illegal to buy them.

Honestly, in the last month I also finally discovered how unbelievably sensible Ron Paul is. I would love to see that guy in office! But in a country who bases their opinions on candidates on superficiality, more than they do on actual subject matter, I don't think Ron Paul will ever have a chance. Go search him on YouTube and just listen to him talk about any government issue, and try to find something he wants to do that would make the USA worse...

I just hope that this means the GOP will either come to its senses and start being actually conservative (as in fiscally conservative, as opposed to crotchety-old-bitches-nagging-about-who-I-sleep-with 'conservative') or crumble and die.

Aaron, you've crystallized my thoughts on Obama exactly... and regarding Ron Paul as well, which is why my vote (which many will consider a "wasted" vote) was to write him in. i knew it wouldn't make any difference in this election. my hope is that a lot of others would do the same.... and that the numbers would encourage him to run again in 2012. a longshot, but i've always been more idealistic than practical regarding politics.

People who voted for either side of the Republicratic party have no right whatsoever to whine about 'wasted votes'. Look how fucking far that's gotten us... it's about damn time people stopped pretending there was no other way to run things and stood a little against the flow.

Jeff

i sympathize with james and aaron. i was a big ron paul guy. like i said before, obama is a great salesman. a closer. beyond that i don't see how anyone that is that idealistic and cinematic can actually deliver on his promises. ron paul was anything but idealistic and provided plausible solutions and smaller government. too bad people like hot air.

President Barack Obama :yow:

Not for a few more months...

Can I be like all those whiny Lib's from the past elections and threaten to move to Canada since it didn't go my way?

Well I wish for the best. As long as I still have the right to carry a gun in my state I won't bitch much. But I'll have to seriously rethink staying in the military now, since I don't see Obama being to big on passing bills for us like Bush did.

As much as I think Ron Paul kicks ass - the fact remains that he dropped out of the race. Why I'm honestly not sure... seems stupid to me...

I also don't think it's fair to say that Obama is just a good speaker. He clearly has some very innovative ideas about making government transparent, using the Internet to connect the people to the government interactively, about the environment, and a host of other issues where his positions are strong and unique.

A debate between Ron Paul and Obama would have been amazing, since they are both very intelligent and like to stick to the hard facts. That would have been a crazy election as well. Pitting Obama against McCain is like having Michael Jordan compete in the special olympics. Not that McCain is stupid - I actually respect him - he's just clearly lost his inner strength and mental clarity - not a fair fight IMO.

I'm also unaware of Obama telling any lies. Seems to me he's run an open, honest campaign, big on the information and low on the sensational bullshit. It doesn't mean I agree with his solutions to everything, but I respect the clarity and specificity with which he discusses the issues and explains his positions.

Wolfeman: I am not a follower of every detail of US politics, but wasn't it Bush who basically fucked over the US military? Cutting compensation, money for equipment, pensions for veterans, etc.?

Hoehlentroll: get off your high horse, please. Most US citizens simply don't know the terrible image the US has in the rest of the world, so your statement is just offensive (even with the winky smiley) ...

To everyone else who thinks Obama is nothing but a good speaker: that's the main presidential quality.

A president doesn't sit in his oval office all day talking to world leaders on his red phone and then pondering what to do. He's got much more qualified staff for that. A president of a country is like the head of a company. Not the best person for the single tasks that are needed to create product, but the best person to represent the company and steer it in the right direction. And that's what Obama does best. The US is the single most hated country in the world right now, the economy is fucked up and Americans are ridiculed everywhere they go (trust me, I've been dating an American girl for the past 2 years, I know!). Just the fact that Obama got elected made the rest of the world believe in change in the US. Are we sceptic, of course we are, but Obama is one of the best, if not the best representative any country in the world could have. He also manages to inspire people and make them believe in themselves and that's almost all he needs to be able to do. Everything else will be prepared by his staff and then he just needs to stick with his agenda when he makes decisions.

In case you don't believe in what I just wrote: look at Bush. He's the exact opposite of what Obama is. And look where it led ...
