I gotta be honest here. I haven't really said much of anything on these boards as far as politics go, but I really truly sincerely feel that Obama is just a massive, massive bag of hot air. He is an eloquent speaker, and he has an impressive knack for putting inspiring sentiments into a clear language that really strike a lot of people in a meaningful way (that's how he won), but I think that's basically all he is. I am unimpressed. I also was never stoked about Palin, but I think it's pretty ridiculous to hear people yell about her lack of foreign policy experience, or about her lack of experience in general. I don't think she is amazingly qualified for president (candidates generally aren't, because they have never been the president before), but she has been both a mayor and a governor and thus has actually been in charge of a pretty substantial piece of governement, whereas Obama has never had that kind of experience at all. That counts for something in my book. And no one has explained to me how Obama is somehow any more qualified in foreign policy than she is. What, he casts votes in the Senate? Obama is a good orator and somehow convinced the masses that he knows what foreign policy is all about, but I see very little to no basis for anyone to claim that he is definitely more qualified than an alternative candidate. When you strip away his cool mood and suave speeches (which are not bad things so much, but don't strike me as being definitive presidential attributes), he doesn't have a lot of appeal. McCain on the other hand, is unarguably a war hero and the guy is just obsessed with his country. When he gets fired up about something (and the media tries to talk about how it's a negative thing), it comes across to me as more of a positive thing- like he actually knows what he's talking about and has real feelings that he isn't afraid to show. I just don't see how a guy like him could possibly abuse presidential powers or make shortsighted decisions about wars or do something to compromise his servitude towards his country that he holds so dearly- that kind of behavior would be the ultimate mistake in his eyes. When all the campaigning and media influence and all the meaningless crap is taken out of the equation, why would we vote for someone who mainly is just a good orator, when the alternative is a war hero who is obsessed with his country? I really just kind of feel like America is getting what it deserves- people who unadmittedly or even unknowingly care more about superficiality than they do about substance. I feel like that is the state of the country, and I am skeptical that Obama will be a fantastic leader.
Hopefully I am wrong.
I also don't really like the whole Democratic idea that big government is better. There are so many instances where a big government is worse. And why should the government have the authority to tell me what kind of guns I can and can't own? I'm all for background checks and making sure guns are only in the right hands, but the gun laws that Obama is going to enact are uninformed and stupid. I'm gonna have to snatch up a couple guns I've been eyeballing before Obama makes it illegal to buy them.
Honestly, in the last month I also finally discovered how unbelievably sensible Ron Paul is. I would love to see that guy in office! But in a country who bases their opinions on candidates on superficiality, more than they do on actual subject matter, I don't think Ron Paul will ever have a chance. Go search him on YouTube and just listen to him talk about any government issue, and try to find something he wants to do that would make the USA worse...
