FUCK YES HE DID IT!!!!!

Hoehlentroll: get off your high horse, please. Most US citizens simply don't know the terrible image the US has in the rest of the world, so your statement is just offensive (even with the winky smiley) ...
yes I know. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend anyone, just changed my comment

one more thing to add: there was poll in Germany just before the american election. "Who would you vote, if you had the chance to elect the american president?" 82% voted for obama!

Well, I'm not surprised. I don't see who would be anyway. While I didn't vote for the man, I'm going to attempt to be optimistic about the future. I agree, a very impressive campaign, speech, and indeed an historic event for the first African American presidential-elect.

But, when the veneer of this entire campaign wears off, and it comes down to making crucial decisions, we will see how he performs. It's hard to trust any politician, even if they are the most eloquent and can identify with the people. We will see the direction he takes our country in the next four years.

smy1, I can understand your viewpoint, but to say that America is the most hated country in the world right now would be generalizing a bit in my opinion. Others can hate American politics if they want, hell they make me sick a lot of the time. But to say that we are hated by everyone would be a stretch. We are a large country that is comprised of a very diverse population of people that have dramatically different ideals. Hell, look at this election for example...

All I'm saying is, the way you worded your statements is a bit inaccurate in my opinion. Also, you are basing it off what one person, your girlfriend, thinks. I know many others think this way as well, but you based what you said off of her opinion. For the American people to be ridiculed as well, is ridiculous. I never have understood this. Sure, there are many intelligent people who see through politics and blame the right people, but to outright label all Americans is uncalled for in my opinion. I'm not saying this is you, just my observation. I have foreign friends who do not think this way, and who have similar opinions regarding Obama. Sure, the majority thinks otherwise. The turnout in Berlin was damn impressive for the man.

Anyways, not trying to stir up a shit storm, just letting you know some of my thoughts dude.

Peace!

Wolfeman: I am not a follower of every detail of US politics, but wasn't it Bush who basically fucked over the US military? Cutting compensation, money for equipment, pensions for veterans, etc.?

Not quite. He passed pay raises, more GI Bill funding, we all have MRAP's and improved tactical vests, etc.... The list is endless.

To add smy1...

I try my hardest not to come off like a dick in my posts, so let me say one last thing. I commented on the "hated America" comment because of how it makes me feel. I'd like to believe I'm a good, tax-paying citizen with my own individual political views. To think that all Americans are hated in every corner of the world it just a bit distressing...a bit disappointing if you will.

I know most of you on this board do not believe this. I know most sensible people realize that there are bad apples in every country, in every corner of the world.

Ah what the hell, rant over.

McCain on the other hand, is unarguably a war hero and the guy is just obsessed with his country. When he gets fired up about something (and the media tries to talk about how it's a negative thing), it comes across to me as more of a positive thing- like he actually knows what he's talking about and has real feelings that he isn't afraid to show. I just don't see how a guy like him could possibly abuse presidential powers or make shortsighted decisions about wars or do something to compromise his servitude towards his country that he holds so dearly- that kind of behavior would be the ultimate mistake in his eyes.

You do realise that nothing a politician says (except for the stupid parts) is usually his real opinion? Neither Obama nor McCain show their real feelings. Just like Jon Bon Jovi or Robert DeNiro. It's all a big, rehearsed act (with some rehearsed reactions to spontaneous events - something Palin was exceptionally bad at) ...

A bag of hot air? Well, it's pretty simple, he will be held accountable for what he says and does in exactly 4 years. Then it's your turn again to decide how much hot air there was and how much substance...

While the guy I voted for won, I'm not doing backflips. Maybe I'll do one when I see something change for the better. Last time I voted a democrat in office he spoodged on every female within a 10 mile radius of the oval office. Or should I say orifice.

While I'm not a religious man, I pray that I never see Palin out of Alaska again.

Let us not forget who gave us the PMRC back in the day. Not all dem ideas are good.

not that it matters much anymore, but read this and i'm sure your opinion of mccain might change a little bit:

long story short: dude's done a magnificent job of making people forget that he's really a total douchebag who's cut from the same cloth as the bush clan

Hey Joe,

everything is cool. As long as nobody resorts to name calling and pointless insults, then all is good in my book :)

I lived in the US in the 90s for about 2 years. I have lived in Canada, in Holland, in Tunisia and most of my life in Germany. I tour all various kinds of countries with my band - from the UK to Israel. I also have many friends from all walks of life and I come from an arabic background (dad was born in Palestine, but moved to Germany in 1958).

My observation is not based on my former girlfriend alone. I just mentioned her because this has just shown me recently again how disliked the US is. She isn't a "typical" American either (she left the states because of Bush's re-election and is currently getting her Masters in Peace And Security studies to actually have some influence on political events), so she wasn't the one getting ridiculed.

My observations are based on the reactions of people who thought I was American (due to my accent) and their much more positive reaction when I told them I was actually German. This has happened so often I can't even begin to count it. It also showed me that it had little to do with my personality but with the pre-conceived notions that people simply have.

I did not mean to say that individual Americans are hated in general, but most people I met simply have no respect for Americans (due to a very low average standard of education and due to some very brash attitudes that you see from US citizens abroad again and again). Also many people really, really despise US foreign and environmental policy. I know that goes against everything US citizens usually believe (manifest destiny and all) - it just doesn't make it less true. Justified or not!

Even if it isn't justified it just shows why Obama is the best choice again: cause his *image* makes people instantly believe in America changing for the better. He now has to prove it, but just last night, the majority of the world sighed with relief thinking "Thank god those moronic US citizens didnt vote for someone like Bush again!". Is it disrespectful? Yes! That's why I asked hoehlentroll to change his statement earlier (which, to his credit, he did!). It still is a very prevalent view throughout the world, which is largely unknown in the US.

(And before all the world-touring US musicians now chime in by saying "We haven't experienced that!!" - please, as if your fans are gonna piss you off like that after the show at a party ...)
