Funniest thing ever .. probably

I'm not saying the music, concept, and lyrics aren't altogether wondrous, just that the commentary aspect is another part. Just a theory, I don't pretend to know the motivations behind Ulver, then or now.

Taking really obscure pictures makes the viewer/listener aware that you're actively trying to make yourself appear less human. I'm not really good at putting this into words I must say...

Hm, and by less "human" you mean less/no focus on the individual? (That's what I concluded from that quote you posted at least) But then I don't really see the point of including a photograph in the first place. If the people behind the music is irrelevant, one shouldn't mention them or have any photos etc, like Deathspell Omega for example.

That might have been the intention when it all started but now it's a thing you "should" do, simply because everyone else is doing it. And that's one of the many problems of black metal today. (Which I don't feel like going into now anyway)

Or even make music videos perhaps?

it's all bullshit. metalheads in general are mostyl shy people with deeply seeded issues that wear crap like corpse paint ... basically to call attention to themselves.

whatever they say otherwise is all part of their insecurity to admit the above.

:D

I have to agree with the point being made here, in order to completely separate the music from the musician, you have to dispense with image as much as possible. I'm not saying that it would need to be packaged with no information or accompanying art whatsoever, but I still find imagery like corpsepaint to be contradictory to that aim.

Still funny that people scoff at my thought that black metal is extremely pretentious.
exactly. and to think that a band like Kayo Dot, just ordinary guys (and girl) in ordinary clothes who dare to take chances with their music, get called pretentious, when there's guys in witch hats running around.

Focus less on the clothes and more on stuff like this and I believe you will understand why

 so this is better?

Wintriness lurk within enlocked realms
Strength beheld our demonthrone
Supernatural journeys from the shrine
Beyond the spiritside
Yearing in beastworlds tide
Blackening watchers with meastrly pride
We rise the demonside
Winters spread by blizzard beasts
Wait no more centuries we have become
Triumphant sons of an ice age's blast
Echoes of our shadowed age
Above the winters masters rage
Convoke nebular dimensions
As real as the realms we ride
With non above and non at side
Yearing the beastworlds tide
Blackening the lands with might
Benighted watchers with masterly pride
We hold the demonside
Wintriness lurk within enlocked realms
Strength beheld our demonthrone
Supernatural journeys from the shrine
Beyond the spiritside

blah blah blah blah

2. Swallowed By A Buried One

Invisible freeze in the blood-wet grass
Combatants lying by their weapons
Feeling the warm blood
When the air turns cold and no one remains

Freezing the warm blood
And eating its way through and reigns

Men from the desert lands
by the sky-high forsakened hills
Erased by the passing of man's creation

From the cliffs they have watched
over the thousand seas
And witnessed the decay and desperation
As illness and plague have caught them all
No one could heal, no one knew, for no one
had ever the knowledge

Few could they count by the elfin kings
That had seen what beauty had been raped
What ancestors mad with their healthy hands
What erected and what was formed and shaped

The finest art one had ever seen
Spectacular admirement of these mystic lands

One stood there alone, the only one left
Strong enough to survive
He was built by death, he was known by death
And he sings the victorious song

Simple deeds, destruction hands
Defeating its material self
We have left you now,
you will never be found again
Feeble fortune and rotting food

reading this stuff, it all seems just like power metal

Immortal is not really a good representative for black metal, seeing as they haven't played black metal since the first album

CAN ANY NORSE PERSON TELL ABOUT OSKOREI ????????wq?wwq??w?

Oskorei = The wild hunt. A part of folklore belief when Odin (and later the devil) was thought to ride flying through the night with the souls of the dead, that's just from the top of my head so don't quote me on that, google or check wikipedia
