G Major usage

Ok, somebody is gonna have to help me with this one. I got a G Major because the band I'm in needs effects. How do I set this thing up for the Quickrod? So far all I get is a tone that kills the high end and causes the lows to thump. It produces a little noise too. I haven't done effects in years, plug straight in, so.....help?
