I'm surprised there's no G3 thread! Was I the only one who went? I actually went to both NYC shows.

I dunno... Yngwie was OK, the guy can shred and all, but not that I've seen SX the next night, there's no doubt MR just blows him away.

I think Vai was the best of all 3, his band had the most stage presense, and he was making the weirdest sounds with hig guitar I've ever heard! I loved the way he started the show, on the triple-neck gutar!

Satch was good as always, I've seen him before with Dream Theater. Speaking about DT... When John Petrucci walked on stage, my eyes almost popped out of their sockets! I wasn't ready for that! Seeing JP and Satch jamming together just a few feet away from me... shit, this was priceless!

I was there Tuesday night. Macalpine played with Vai, but him and Sheehan did not come out for the encore. It was Vai, Yngwie, Satch, Petrucci and Neal Schon on stage for the 3 encores. I saw Symphony X Wednesday also and Romeo was better IMO. I think Petrucci was there Monday night also.

Macalpine made the best of what little spotlight he was given. The last arpeggio run he did during the duel with Vai was unbelievable. He also doubled a solo from Passion and Warfare with Vai earlier in the set that was completely insane.

Wow.. JP was at your show? Was Tony MacAlpine there too?

I did a review of G3 at Denver (which I think is being made into a DVD), so just search the forum.

I've read your review, nice job with that! In NYC, JP joined Satch at the end of "Always with Me, always with you". And then they played "Summer Song" together, that was sooo cool! Then Satch said something like yeah, it really is John Petrucci, we wanted to do something a little different this year, not just G3, and then Neal Schon walks out as well. And then they did the 3-song encore. So I guess you can call it G5 :D

Aside from JP playing Summer Song with Satch, the final jam at the end of "Rocking in the free world" was awsome. Yingwie kept doing his guitar acrobatics, it was a bit out of place.

So who was on stage for the final jam at Denver? Just Satch, Vai, and Yingwie?

Yeah, the only unexpected guest there was Tony MacAlpine. I guess because Petrucci lives in New York area (or NJ, I'm not sure), and he's so busy, he couldn't be there for the WHOLE tour. Nonetheless, great show.

Actually MacAlpine is part of Vai's band on the G3 tour, so he's not that unexpected ;)

I was at the Bawston show. Billy Sheehan rox my world :)

Vai really kicked ass on for the love of god. Sheehan also threw in some unexpected licks in there which made it even better.

I saw the 2nd NYC show and I thought Yngwie owned everyone's ass. He was easily the best set of the night.

I think Vai blew both of them away. His playing was unsurpassed. Sure, Joe had the best tone and Yngwie had the craziest show, but Vai's was just incredible. Everything from Tony MacAlpine to Billy Sheehan to the three neck guitar to the 4 guys lining up and playing each others guitars. Oh, and the songs themselves were great too. Before seeing him live, I wasn't aware that Vai was THAT good. The only album of his I have is Alien Love Secrets which I'm not too fond of but I think I'll be getting more of his albums now.

I was at the Pittsburgh date. They were all great, I can't pick which one was the best because their sets were so different. I gained a lot of respect for Satch - didn't expect to be too impressed by him, but he was so cool.

Meh, going to see Symphony X soon, MJR will dominate all of them.
