German thrash vs the world???

Woah, I'd never imply that you had anything but the most impeccable of tastes, O' Mighty Hell Mike! Come on now...

Let's see... Of the bands I considered to be irrelevant on that list, I've heard the following:

Assassin
Mekong Delta
Necronomicon
Holy Moses
Iron Angel
Poison
Tankard
Angel Dust
Exumer
Minotaur

And the word that struck me the most was 'derivative'. Don't get me wrong, though, I suppose some of these are good for a thrash and a beer, but hardly something I'd bother passing off as essential, when the three greats (Kreator, Destruction and Sodom) basically do everything better (Not that Dødens did, though... the only reason we are having this discussion, after all, is because V5 got his little panties in a bunch). For people who listens to large amounts of thrash, I can see that these second-tiers can provide some healthy variation, though.

In some cases I certainly agree, and I don't think there's one band in that list I'd put above the three mentioned greats, but Tankard (and Poison) at least were alive and kicking about the same time as those three and very fucking good all the way, actually I think they're among the ones who have released solid material these last few years instead of just plain dying when the 90s hit.

ANYWAYS! In most cases I think derivative is the wrong word for those, as would essential be, but asskicking is true for most and you should agree or I will be sad Or at least we can agree that while they don't compete for the top spot they are a good listen who want more than th BLA BLA I forgot what I was saying, hail and kill!

I just listened to Protector - A Shedding of Skin. I hadn't spun it in a while, and it reminded me of why I like German style thrash better than Bay Area style thrash.

I wasn't listing "essential" bands, I was listing all of the solid German Thrash bands what actually made it beyond the demo stage in order to show the depth of the scene, not simply to show how many bands that I know. If I wanted to do that I would've named a bunch of demo era bands and would've said Tormentor and Checker Patrol. Also, I don't know how you can listen to Mekong Delta or Poison and think "derivative." Or even Iron Angel, who lean more toward the Speed Metal direction. For many of those bands, however, the world you'll be wanting isn't "derivative" but rather "contemporary. Holy Moses (in various forms) has actually been around since 1979. Poison formed in 1982, as did Tankard. Minotaur, Necronomicon, Iron Angel, and Assassin formed in 1983. Darkness, Angel Dust, and Exumer formed in 1984. Mekong Delta in 1985.For a comparison, Heathen formed in 1984, Vio-Lence formed in 1985, and Holy Terror formed in 1986.

Not that this is actually a big deal, but at this point I've already typed all of this out and I don't want it to go to waste, so I'm posting it anyway. Sorry if I sound annoyed, I'm just making an unnecessary point.

I think you missed this part of my post, champ:

And there is obviously a huuuuuge void between 'irrelevant' and 'essential', which is filled by tons of band, many of whom just mentioned. I never meant to make such a big deal out of this, honestly, it just escalated...

Have you ever heard Whiplash's take on that concept? It wasn't released until 1998 on their Thrashback album, but it was written in 1984 and released on their second demo. It really is a kickass song if you like Speed/Thrash.

If I had to choose between never listening to US thrash again or never listening to German thrash again, I'd choose to forsake US thrash. The only unavoidable flaw in that would be the absence of Slayer.

Yeah. But you could turn it around and do the same thing with the German scene, which undeniably has equally essential bands. In other words, you could really forsake neither. I do tend to listen to a lot more German thrash than American, but of course I do listen to my favorite American thrash bands such as early Slayer, Morbid Saint, Sadus, etc.

Ah, a classic argument, but surely the sound conclusion is that the US and Germany clearly have had roughly comparable quality bands ? That being said, they are easily the best two historical thrash scenes. I wish I could say that Britain had an awesome thrash scene "back in the day", but to be honest, we didn't - not that I would be as disparaging as others to Xentrix and Onslaught (as my thoughts on the genius of Sabbat, who I will be seeing live in 2 days, are well known), but there were a whole load of fucking shit bands. The fact that Acid Reign were one of the better selling UK thrash bands probably says it all; and while I enjoy listening to their old tapes from time to time, I think it fair to say that Agent Orange and Killing is My business will always attract more of my air play.
