Ghost: I must be in the extreme minority...

Dumb question...are you referring to the band "Ghost" or the new Devin Townsend Project album Ghost?

I'm not familiar with the band Ghost, nor have I heard that particular DTP album, hence my potentially stupid question.

The retro/garage sound is, to me, a big part of their appeal. I love the satanic gimmickry too, but they're just a fun and very retro band. I wish I could explain it better than that. There's just someething about their sound that makes me grin every time I hear one of their songs.

I kept hearing about this band, and finally tracked down a proper song or two a while back. I mean, people are going crazy over this band.
After listening, I kind of dug the retro metal sound, kind of a return to basics, but I certainly wasn't blown away or anything, so I know what you mean.
I didn't appreciate the satanic trappings, real or not.

Aaron and Bryan saw them play at like 2AM at Maryland Deathfest. They said the Sonar was packed like sardines and every single person was singing along.

Whatever they are doing with whatever connections they have, its working. There were 4-5 ghost shirts (ones exclusively sold at MDF) at the children of bodom/septic flesh (who was the best band that night IMHO).

I don't particularly care for the music, all though it is very groovy, its just too retro. I mean that ex bassist from holy grail should be playing for them.

I would however be down to see their live show. Aaron said its very very haunting since like everyone is dressed and the singers persona is just spooky. He said that he felt like he was going to be possessed at any minute and that he has never seen anything like it.

they probably would bring a boat load of people to center stage.

but you would have to get Freedom Call on the same bill to even it out ;)

..but I just don't "get it." They are talented musicians, but I just cannot get past the retro/garage sound at times.

I KNOW!!! It's bizarre that all these Metal Hipsters (including James Hetfield) think they are the second coming. :err:

I mean Mercyful Fate was doing this 25 years ago..and with better vocals!!! :Smokedev:

I love it as it's a mix of a lot of things I like, i.e. doom, Blue Oyster Cult and a touch of Mercyful Fate. I will admit though, I'm sorta confused how they're getting all this buzz. Maybe it's the look.

Glenn, just curious. Do you like BOC?

They're touring the U.S. with Enslaved in September and October. I want to go because I'm sort of massively into Enslaved right now, but between Ghost's hipster appeal, Enslaved's current hipster appeal, and the fact that it'll be in the non-Brooklyn hipster capital of the world (the north side of Chicago), I fear that the place is gonna be overrun by bearded, PBR-drinking cretins.

the appeal is that it is not over produced, with a polished manufactured sound. Ghost does not sound like a machine or a video game and I think a lot of people are getting tired of that anyway so Ghost are an alternative to that.
Maybe it is "retro" and the band set out to sound like B.O.C. but damn it is better than bands loosely referred to as "progressive" that don't "progress". I believe Ghost is in an area where they could go any direction that they want with their music much like B.O.C before them. I don't think that can be said for many bands today. But who knows; consider Opeth seems the same album the past few releases now.
Call it "retro" or whatever Ghost like a lot of doom bands and stuff surrounding that genre tend to go back to a sound that seemed to have a little more emotion and feeling to it than what recent years have had to offer.

It took me a few listens of the CD before it really clicked. I really enjoy the album now.

I saw the live Ghost experience at Maryland Deathfest. I thought it was a great show. They took a long time to setup & started late, around 1AM. They finished their set around 2AM. It was pretty packed in the Sonar main room for them. I was surprised how many people knew the words for the songs. The stage show was pretty cool. I am really looking forward to the Enslaved tour to catch 2 bands I really like.

There is really good video of them at the Fortarock festival a few weeks ago.

OK....so had to check them out as I had not heard of them (what else is new), that and I more times than not, seem to be in the minority about so many things...lol....so...do not mind the "retro " musical sound, but the vocal sound seems a tad out of place for the music....not working for me.

ok...just watch a snippet of the above (top) video...very cool look....nothing else changed for me....lol.

I just learned about them, last week. I totally dig the vocals, I dig the music, I just like it. I even dig the goofy satanism stuff. It's hillarious. It's like watching Dethklok. I don't take anything they do seriously, and it's like comedy I can listen to.
