Hey all you Katatonia maniacs! :)

As 'Ghost of the Spring' TOUR commences today, I propose to gather all our impression concerning the shows. Just write what you experienced.

I'm really curious about your opinion how the new stuff sounds live...
and whether Before the Dawn will follow Katatonia on the second part of the tour.

So, I count on you. ;)
At first Tavastia is asked to speak !!!
(what about To/Die/For live???)

Yep, I made it to the 2nd April show in Helsinki. This was my first time in Tavastia, and the venue was far more than I expected, much better than Nosturi where I usually go. The decour was tasteful, and there was no 2 meter wide fence between the audience and the band. The first band of the evening, Pornorphans came off as mediocre goth rock with an annoying vocalist. Her voice had the tendency of sounding like a bad imitation of Daffy Duck. The girl looks much better in real life than in pics though.

To/Die/For probably had the best sounds of the evening, coming off as Duran Duran with metal tendencys. Pretty entertaining though, if only for the drummer's 80's drumming style.

By the time Katatonia came on the stage the place was packed from front to back. When the band hit the first chords of Ghost of the Sun a mosh erupted in front of Renkse, and most of the audience was giving horns and headbanging. They got a very good reception all round, with Teargas, Future of Speech, Chrome, and Murder invoking the greatest amount of moshing/headbanging. Of the new songs Evidence probably got the best reception, while Sleeper left a lot of people standing still. During Future of Speech and Teargas there was also stage diving, heheh.

Ghost of the Sun
Criminals
Teargas
I am Nothing
Complicity
Sweet Nurse
Chrome
Sleeper
I Break
For my Demons
Future of Speech
Tonight's Music
Evidence
Murder

Anders was probably the least mobile of the band members, not budging from his position in front of the mic. Fred and Mattias moved around quite a bit especially to the end of the set. Renkse surprised me by moving several meters from the mic stand every now and then, naturally while slapping his pocket. This laconic style suits them quite well though, and the songs more than made up for the lack of movement on stage. The sound quality was decent, but not amazing. The guitars were not particularly clear, and Renkse's vocals could have been mixed higher. Renkse sounded excellent though, although the rest of the band seemed to have small problems playing together on the new songs.

I was quite surprised that they played so much off LFDGD compared to VE, and Sleeper was a pretty odd choice (it's a crime they didn't play Wealth). Only one song off Discouraged Ones, probably because they didn't want to slow down the otherwise "heavy" set. All in all an excellent show from the guys, although the audience probably made half of it for me.

Thanx Ormir for exhausitive description... :):):)
I'm truly disappointed TDF won't play in Poland at last. There was also a slight chance for Before the Dawn, but they withdrew too. dough sucks :(:(:(
The set you mentioned really sounds good for me, now I can't wait till Wednesday...
You say there was stage diving and the audience made only half. Hmm... interesting.... I haven't seen diving on any Katatonia show since 'DoDS'... ;)

hi babies
yv, as far as i know before the dawn are playing on next wednesday in wroclaw too. unfortunately i'd say... i had a chance to listen thier new promo a few days ago and it sounded terrible. aint worth of copying even on the cheapest cdr haha those two polish supports bands are as 'good' as bth.

i'm very suprised with the setlist ! i thought that at this level of progression :) they forgot about thier greatest LP (BMD of course :) ). the last time they played here in 2000 as a encore song they plaed 'without god' with andreas on vocals and it was really nice ! :) can't wait !

Unfortunately, you're not right: I asked BtD about the fact on their guestbook and Tuomas answered 'NO'. Pity 100 times... :(
Btw, their new stuff on CD sounds pretty cool :)

Katatonia didn't forgot 'bout BMD (you can see Murder in set) ;)
Concerning Ander's 'without god': I was on that show and devildamn yeah, it was SOMETHING.

What's your point, you meant DoDS instead of BMD? ;)
Btw, if you don't like BtD you can simply avoid their show... :D
Oh, just leave it, it doesn't concern the thread...
hehe, If you wish we may continue this annoying conversation in private ;)

it sounds very interesting... How did it come out?
when they were on the tour with Opeth it was no big problem to play BMD slices; Mike just joined them on stage and did all the growlings.
great times... ;)

I saw Katatonia play live last night in Turku. When we arrived at Säätämö the band was already there talking with the fans. But Anders, Jonas and Daniel left just as we got in, so I only managed to get autographs from Mattias and Fredrik.

The show started at about 11 pm. First band on the stage was Pornorphans. They played ok, but the singer chic's voice was annoying. The second warm-up band was Lullacry. Their playing was very energetic and the band had lot of moshing going on. My only complaint about their performance is that the new singer Tanja had some problems with singing some songs.

It was about 0:45 am when Katatonia started their gig with Ghost of the Sun. For the first couple of songs sound quality wasn't good. The guitar sound was quite bad so that you couldn't here guitars almost at all. After that sound quality got better but it still wasn't very good. They also had some problems with monitors and drums so that Jonas and Daniel had to fix those problems between the songs.

The band played 4 song from Viva, 5 songs from LFDGD, 2 songs from both TD and DO and one song from BMD. I can't remember in which order they played the songs, but these are the songs they played:

Ghost of the Sun, Criminals, Complicity, Evidence, Chrome, Teargas, Tonight's Music, The Future of Speech, Sweet Nurse, For My Demons, I Am Nothing, I Break, Deadhouse and Murder

So since wednesday's Tavastia gig they had replaced Sleeper with Deadhouse. The set ended with Evidence and as encore they played Deadhouse and Murder.

The band played well and Jonas' vocals were just awesome. I saw Katatonia first time in Tuska 2001 and since then Jonas has improved his singing skills very much. Of course, Jonas growled vocs in Murder and he is quite good in growls too.

I had read this thread before the gig so I knew the songs they had played in Helsinki, but still I was bit surprised that they played only four songs from Viva Emptiness. It would've been very nice to hear Will I Arrive, Burn the Remembrance and Walking by a Wire also. But you can't have everything. Katatonia have so many excellent songs to choose from.

Overall I can say that I'm pretty satisfied with the gig. Katatonia played very well but I am a bit disappointed with the sound quality. Hopefully they can fix those problems for the rest of the tour. So now I'm eagerly waiting for Katatonia DVD and some more pocket-slapping action.:D

i heard the bootleg from the latest paris show.... so, is that like was a really bad single show, or katatonia aren't exactly a good live band?:)

Oh good, someone else was quicker, my comment of Säätämö's gig would have been weak anyway since I seemed to be very thirsty  Tho there were some problems, I still enjoyed the gig very much, it was my first time I saw Katatonia live :)

Well i could'nt believe it when i read Katatonia were coming to England, and even more so cause its the day after my 18th!!!!

I dont think im looking forward to Pornorphans tho but hay at least i get to see Katatonia for my first time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Btw, I've got one Jonas live-pic (Tavastia gig) from Jake, administrator of To/Die/For Forum (photographers unknown). Pic is a little crappy as he says, but I like it anyway... :)

Hey girls: don't you think Jonas is really cute now? Great he decided to let his hair grow again. This image suits much much better :hotjump:
;):);)
