'Ghost of the Spring' TOUR - Your impression after the show...

I'm surprised they are not playing "Will I Arrive" and actually there was even thought before the tour that they were going to end the set with "Brave"...

@yv, thanx for posting that pic:)
Jonas looks really great, even if I still prefer him with blond hair, ha ha, but who cares after all:)

ti ho mandato un pm :)

I saw two gigs last week. Helsinki, Tavasti aand Jyväskylä, Lutakko.
here are some thoughts...

Helsinki:
Katatonia: Great show. Crowd could have been more enthusiastic! Saw guys with Katatonia shirts hanging at the bar during the show! So typical Helsinki crowd!
The new material sounded awesome.

To/Die/For: I have seen them play 2 years ago and thought they were boring then. Still think so! All songs sound the same. B-class HIM. Be happy they are not on rest of the tour.

Pornorphans: Missed the start. Only saw two songs, but thought they rocked nicely. Was very impressed with the smallest singer of the evening who had the biggest voice.

Jyväskylä:
Katatonia: This show kicked ASS!!!!!!! Probably one of my Top 3 gigs I've ever seen. The crowd was with them 100%, the sounds were excellent...Better than in Tavastia.Top show!!!! The set was alot longer too than in Helsinki. Go Lutakko!!!

Pornorphans:
Very entertaining live, should've played longer. The girls in the crowd seemed to love the singer here. Even bought a single after the gig and it sounds very good.

First band: Forgot their name. Only saw half the set (yeah, I'm always late...) and they were...well, not bad, but definately not good. Degenerated...I think that's the name...?

sorry for you @mourningstar :(
And thanx for all your thanx and descriptions...
Now you owe us some pics :)
And yeah Mica: ToDieFor decented lately, 'Jaded' could be mch better...

Concerning Jonas's hair, I still prefer it black, maybe it's because I can't have them like it-I'd look like some old grandma... :(

i think this is the first official live review:
http://letsmakesomenoise.com/livearvostelut/index.php?id=91

It's in finnish but I'll make a brief translation....

Pornorphans:
Very good and intense gig. the singer has more "balls" than most malesingers together. The band has a good future...

Lullacry:
The singer was nervous in the beginning, but the whole band seemed to enjoy the show. Guitarist is excellent. Good Lullacry gig.

Katatonia:
The gig was brilliant. They mostly played older material, only 4 songs from VE. The songs sounded really "heavy" live and the audience loved them. Sadly there was no encore, but the reviwer enjoyed the gig with his whole body and soul...

Rating: 5/5

So, it’s my turn now. After two years of waiting I finally saw them live in Wroclaw, Poland again. Since they are my No. 1 there’s no surprise the show has been my best experience this year…

The one disgusting thing was the weather, which truly let us down yesterday. A week ago we had 15 degrees and full sun. Unfortunately winter’s struck once again with snow and hard wind (straight from Finland hehe :)). ‘Ghost of the Spring’ curse didn’t worked. I shivered all nite.
Club SRC, Wroclaw is quite small, guess for 300 people at last. Yesterday there were only about 100. Anyway, that’s in advantage, as you may watch the show in the first row, 1 meter from the band and see everything clearly. So did we.
I was disappointed a bit, because when we approached the club Anders, Fred, Daniel and Mattias were living the bar and going backstage. They passed me twice without due notice of my camera :(. Jonas didn’t show himself before the gig (or did I just miss him?)-he seems to be no effusive individual, appears fairly shy one.
So I watched bootlegs instead. Btw, the shirt from the new alb is just great, ‘Wealth’ image especially…
Then the gig started and we hurried to the stage. In Poland Katatonia has 2 Supporters, polish bands: Desdemona and Asgaard. Here go a few words about them:

Desdemona: some kind of electronic metal with female vocals. Guyz looked like my neighbors selling potatoes in near stake, but played quite good. Sound was ok. I don’t like female vocals at all, so I wasn’t impressed particularly by anorectic girl, whose ways of expression were simply repulsive. Sorry :(

Asgaard: band from my actual hometown, playing sth what might be called epic black/doom metal. And they were those, who made the crowd into intensive movement. No shit, maybe they don’t sound well on their records, nevertheless gave truly great show. Vocalist was the brightest individual on the stage, his growls and screams just knocked me down. Katatonia crew and members also came for a glance. I took an advantage of that and gripped Fred standing aside. I only took his photo, as the noise from the stage prevent us from longer chat.

Katatonia started at about 9 and played approx. 1,5 hour. The set remained almost the same as in Finland:

VE: Ghost of the Sun, Criminals, Burn the Remembrance, Complicity, Evidence
LFDGD: Chrome, Teargas, Sweet Nurse, Tonight’s Music, the Future of Speech
TD: I am Nothing, For My Demons
DO: I Break, Deadhouse
BMD: Murder

Of course ‘Ghost of the Sun’ was played on the beginning. ‘Evidence’ closed main part of the show; as an encore we heard ‘Deadhouse’ and Murder’. They played additionally ‘Burn the Remembrance’. I think 5/5 relation between LFDGD and VE songs should be no surprise, as there was no regular LFDGD tour, so everybody felt the desire to hear songs from that record. Me suits great! The crowd also acted perfectly: people were jumping, horning, headbanging, spelling the lyrics and clapping all the show.

Unfortunately Katatonia had a permanent problem with vocals, which were barely heard against too noisy section. Anyway Jonas tried to correct that by singing louder. Expression was as rare as usual. Jonas with his eyes closed sang all the songs with immense sensitivity. He constantly clapped his pocket, hardly let himself to bang his head. :) Anders truly enjoyed his vocal parts and solos. :) Daniel did superb work on the drums and made people to rhythmic headbanging. Fred turned red after 5 songs and tried to ‘survive’ the rest :) Mattias just hid behind Jonas. :(

As for the songs: all sound intensive and surprisingly even, though those from LFDGD suited better for jumping and those from VE-much heavier, better for banging. The best songs that evening were for me: ‘My Sweet Nurse’, ‘Complicity’, ‘Chrome’ , ‘Evidence’, ‘Criminals’ and ‘’Tonight’s Music’. People expressed the best during ‘Murder’ with great Jonas growlings. I think many people in the audience expected songs from elder albs. But guyz, we must accustom to the fact that Katatonia doesn’t play such music now. :) All good in bad to me! :headbang:
To sum up, it was the best Katatonia show I’ve ever seen, so immense, expressive and simply perfect. :headbang: I sucked all the note and word they provided us, but still desire more!!! Since they left I feel infinite emptiness in my heart. Please guyz come back here ASAP… :worship:

Pics will follow!!!
Can’t wait to see DVD, which is to be recorded today in Cracow. Seems to be superb!

thanx yv for your detailed report! I´m waiting for your pics:)
I hope I´ll have a chance to meet the guys after the show, I want autographs and pics!

yv, great review ! anyway, i can't agree at two points :
- i'm sure there were around 200 ppl.
- my opinion about the polish support is clear : TOTAL FUCKIN' MISUNDERSTANDING ! especially those clowns from asgard !! it was first time in my life i felt ashamed that i'm from the same country as the 'musicians' on the stage. there is only one way for those guys : suicide ! no need to say more.
i have nothing to add aboout the katatonia's gig. i have exactly the same impression. unfortunately Jonas' vocals weren't perfect that night and as far as i know the cracow gig was even worse in this matter...

Yeah I guess you may be right I didn't count them ;)

Yeah I guess you're right at last. I didn't want to use such drastic words as you did, but you can feel slight irony in my description... :) Anyway, some people around me liked them :]

Vocals were good, only technicians failed... I was standing in the first row (you too?) and noticed Jonas's efforts to sing even louder. But one can't win with such noisy section... :(
Regarding Cracow, it's really shity to hear they had the same problems :(
It may affect DVD quality. BTW, were there recordings at last???

I kurde, pes, nie spotkaliśmy się czasem? Powinniśmy się chyba poznać, nie? :)

So Katatonia played live in Budapest yesterday. And I'm terribly, terribly sorry to say but it was awful because of the sound. The whole program was like a mess, no distinct sounds could be heard, the singing was weak, no clear guitar solos. All I could hear was some overwhelming bass (but not the bass guitar itself). All those magical tunes were lost in a pile of shit.

I really regret to say this, but the show was a great disappointment to me. Nothing positive. Viva Emptiness just kicks ass and tears heart but now I feel I shouldn't have seen them live, at least not here in Budapest. Fucked-up technicians, or whoever is responsible for the mess.

Boohoohooo

hey, @Dhatura we were thinking these technical problems over and we came to the point Katatonia or the clubs in central Europe may just have malfunctioning equipment... :( However, when I recall the show in 2001, it was quite OK. :)

And the same concerns, I guess, Jonas's growls-it might have been only temporary ailment during recording time... :\

What a pity, Dhatura  The same happened to me with my first Paradise Lost gig a month ago, and it was really disappointing too. I hope it won´t happen again with Katatonia, cos I´m gonna see them for the first time in a couple of weeks!!! :hotjump:

OMG, Paradise Lost are gonna play here in a club in August. I'm afraid, so afraid... Shit.

BTW, I've talked to a number of people since the Katatonia concert, and some say it wasn't bad, in fact, it was good. I just don't know, maybe we weren't at the same gig :)
