Ghost Signs Major Label Deal Valued At Almost $1 Million

Well, I had read an interview with GHOST a while back where they mentioned they didnt intend to do more than one more album. I suppose "strike while the iron is hot" They probably figure they won't meet label's expectations anyhow and will get dropped, but at least get some coin up front.

So....why not! Kudos to them.

Exactly, there is really no way they can make that money back. BTBAM didn't even get close to that figure with Metal Blade and they STILL sell far more albums than Ghost has yet to. Not only is there this signing bonus then there is the recording budget and promotional budget to add to that million bucks. hahaha.

I have read they signed to some major label upstart or something so this could be viewed as a huge chance to promote the label and get it some hype from the get go but who knows with "record execs" these days. We are all a little bit insane. hahahaha.

This will probably just end badly for one, or both, of the parties involved.

I mean really! haha even in the little I know, I just don't see how they can pull that off... And who the hell wants to start a label with Ghost as the first one? I would have thought they would take some other band that has more sales and is just bigger in general...

Oh the industry just does not make sense sometimes eh? Now I'm just waiting for Ghost to be scooped up, booking wise, by satan himself. :heh:

Well, I don't think we can judge whether they can sell that much until the next album actually comes out. Remember, when they first came out a lot of the fans that were into them bought the European/other release as the US version came out much later.

People may call bullshit on me all they want, but for me I fell in love with the music before I had any clue about their schtick, i.e. attire/stage show. They just make cool, catchy songs. As for how they became this popular, I really have no clue. I mean maybe the look helped for some but there are tons of other bands that have bizzarre looks that never reach anywhere near as much popularity. It could just be the perfect storm of right time, right place, right style, etc.

A few friends of mine saw them play dead last at Maryland Deathfest last year. Said it was packed - everyone knew their songs and the cd had just come out. Said their stage show was also the most haunting thing of all time. Maybe this has to do with it? I personally saw some pretty creepy live footage of them.

Sales are sales. Only thing that is affected by territory releases is that the territory who gets it last loses sales to all the impatient people who buy the import, but the total number of sales (worldwide) would be the same.

Ghost has not sold more copies than the top grossing BTBAM album. If they had i would be shocked.

I wasn't saying that, but what I am saying is the album never reached billboard, yet they had a strong headline run where they basically sold out everywhere, which isn't very common. This is why I think you can't fully judge how they'll do until the next disc. However, I do agree that it'll be quite tough to make that money back.

I'm calling bullshit. They are on the frontpage of r/metal almost every day. There is news on Blabbermouth weekly. James Hetfield and Phil Anselmo have been photographed wearing their shirts. Their first headlining tour sold out most of its shows. They just did a massively successful tour with Opeth and Mastodon. It is literally impossible to regularly follow any source of metal news and not at least be familiar with the amount of hype Ghost is getting.

I seem to remember you saying something similar about Quorthon/Bathory, too.

Nailz is kind of like one of those eastern European countries that was communist up until the 90's and is now just discovering that there was a whole world of entertainment in the 1980's and 90's, and that there's more to life than the small snippets of entertainment they were getting through the cracks - you know - like the occasional weird Polish electronic/hip hop/pop band that was note for note copying Michael Jackson or new kids on the block because nobody else would know otherwise?

I wonder if they signed the contract in blood...

You know, there's an interview or video (I forgot which one) that reveals Peter Steele signed Type O to Roadrunner with a mixture of his own blood and semen... So I wouldn't put that past them haha.

Pretty sure you are describing "The Experts" featuring John Travolta. Pretty much sums it all up.

Sadly, you're not really far off. I didn't know metal (or non-radio music) was a thing until 2002, and I've already been through my "MUST CONSUME EVERYTHING METAL" phase and am well into my "I know what I like so get off my lawn" phase.

I LOVE these internet arguments:

Person 1: I don't know about/haven't seen/ don't get X.
Person 2: But they're popular, you MUST have seen them/known about them!
Person 1: No, I haven't. Can you explain?
Person 2: How can you not have heard about/seen then. They are popular. I'VE heard about them.
Person 1: I really don't know anything about them.
Person 2: That's impossible. Everyone has heard about them.
Person 1: I'm really not trolling, I just don't know about them.
Person 2: You're lying. It's impossible not to know about and appreciate this band.
Person 1: I'm not lying. I really don't know about them. Please help me understand.
Person 2: (head explodes from not being able to handle the idea that not ALL information, even popular information, is universal)

>"who the FUCK is this band?"

>implying these are the same posts.

As a retailer, I can say Ghost sold very fast initially, and steadily since then. That's alot more than I can say for 95% of metal bands I sell, especially the part about the 'after-initial sales'. Musically they're not bad in my book, and I make a few bucks carrying their product. AND, those whom I turn onto the band are impressed, buy the CD, and thank me afterward. And that rarely happens any more. So I have no problem with them. So, like them or don't, they're selling, so they must have something going on. If you haven't heard of them, I'm not dissing you. If you think they must be crap BECAUSE you have not heard of them, you are way the hell off.

Savior Machine did it better. 20 years ago.

Why were people so quick to dismiss them, yet embrace Ghost en masse? Perhaps it's that "God/Jesus imagery is serious, but Satan stuff is just schtick" denotes a band's acceptance amongst the masses. Foolishness. /conflict

Still laughing at "trollfarts" and "what a fraggle"

Savior Machine was (is?) amazing, but I don't see the Ghost comparison.

Honestly I don't see how Savior Machine sounds at all anything like Ghost. They're more of a goth rock band and Ghost is more of a trippy retro rock band.

But this sort of thing DOES happen. There are bands who get lost in the shuffle all the time and sometimes those bands were super ahead of their time. Blessed By A Broken Heart never really got huge and are/were were pretty innovative for what they're doing - combining 80's hair metal theatrics with punk and hardcore moments. But they just fell by the wayside while Escape The Fate, Asking Alexandria, and similar bands are starting to take off. It happens.
