GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums Of 1988

SSoaSS is great you fucks. Shit on The Evil That Men Do for having a repetitive chorus all you want but the verses are spine-chilling.

AND I WILL PRAY FOOOR YOUUUU
SOMEDAY I MAY RETURN
DON'T YOU CRY FOR ME
BEYOND IS WHERE I LEARN

peak Dickinson.

That anyone could even cite The Clairvoyant as a filler track is completely unfathomable to me.

It's sappy as fuck and the generic gallop gallop under those verses don't help. Would have been a wimpier song on one of the first couple Ratt albums.

Have roughly 40 more pending to add which I may or may not include depending on how much I feel like listening to lower-tier metal from 1988 this weekend. I think I will give Under the Influence a fair relisten though, I have it at 0.5 stars on RYM but I think it would be at least a 2 star or so album for me today.

EDIT: Fuck, forgot Morbid Saint which means I have to keep Mekong Delta out. :(

I hope he makes one

He said he was going to do the essentials and he's already done Sabbath and Priest so I don't see why he wouldn't do Maiden. Who would you do after that though? Motorhead?

This is VERY preliminary but I think these will end up being in the Top 10 at the end of my listening:

Metallica - AJFA
Slayer - South of Heaven
Testament - The New Order
Iron Maiden - SSOASS
Liege Lord - Master Control
Death - Leprosy
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Riot - Thundersteel
Megadeth - SFSGSW (????)
Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn

Razor, Priest, Helloween, Atrophy or Blind Guardian might get pushed into the list

Listening to Realm - Endless War. This is better than I remember it being probably because I wasn't super into thrash at the time. Eleanor Rigby cover is fun.

so we're counting spectrum of death as 88?

i've just been using an online RNG that picks an integer between 1980 and 2009 btw. sorry to ruin the image of me picking folded pieces of paper out of a hat.

i might do a 70s one at some point but i don't see much point in doing individual 70s years. i could start including years from this decade if people want though.

The Evil That Men Do, Only the Good Die Young, the title track, and The Clairvoryant say otherwise.

SSoaSS is filler-free, perhaps the only Maiden album to be so. Very cohesive and compelling record from start to finish. The tracks are free bloated passages as well. The title track may be long, but it is perfectly paced and developed to function as the epic centerpiece of the album.

You could do just one for the entire 70s or maybe you could do 70-74 and 75-79. There certainly aren't enough albums to do a year-by-year.

The thrash metal giants had just begun to emerge on the other side of their prime period, but were still capable to putting out some killer shit. Older metal acts though were really starting to show their age. Nevertheless, metal was in a grace period, with lots of new and exciting music being made. Music videos for metal acts were becoming a standard, and hair bands were beginning to spread their toxicity to the masses. The underground scene for more extreme shit was a-stirring.

1. Metallica - ...And Justice for All
2. Slayer - South of Heaven
3. Coroner - Punishment for Decadence
4. Danzig - Danzig
5. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
6. Sadus - Illusions
7. Angel Dust - To Dust You Will Decay
8. Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
9. King Diamond - "Them"
10. Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum

I have to stop doing honorable mentions...
