Very fun year. Good year for old-school style death metal. Bloodbath's record completely nailed that thick Swedish buzzsaw sound, but man is that album boring. Horrendous on the other hand showed everyone how it's fucking done. Morbus Chron also did an excellent job, and it's weird to only have it ranked #10, but it was a stacked year.

I also really want to like Teitanblood's release from this year. There are some great moments interspersed throughout the album, but I just can't hang with that level of cacophony that fluffs the rest of it. The production is killer, but why do they need to resort to dragging shit out with meaningless blastbeats. It's not really atmospheric or "shoegaze" enough to warrant 10+ minute songs. Cut that shit in half and focus on the groovy parts.

Anyone else wanna postpone the deadline on this? I have mucho more to check out!
sure we can push it back a few days i guess. But get on it compa, don't make us wait too long.

Hopefully we get something from the 80's or 90's next time around. A few old-schoolers stayed out of this one and tbh i wouldn't want to do two 21st century years in a row. But the gods will be the ones to decide.

I’m actually down for another 21st century year. This year was dope as fuck, and the last few old school years we have left are so good that they should be left for last. All good things must come to an end, so let’s stretch that end to the last drop

Just realised we have not done 1997 yet. Not as strong as 1996 or 1998, but still a pretty good year in the 90s. Especially when it comes to black metal. Beyond the Wandering Moon and Witchcraft bitches.

Yeah but 1990 is more of a classic year. 1997 isn’t quite classic, but still a good year we haven’t done.

Nattens Madrigal - I like it a lot, but I’m not sure it’s appreciated around these parts. The obviously engineered production will put some off and it’s pretty derivative of classic Darkthone. Still, I think the melodies, atmosphere and songwriting are strong enough for it to be a worthwhile album.

I also think it has a weaker second half. First 4 tracks are my favourites.

please try to cut back on the derogatory and misogynistic remarks. Thanks. ;)

An yeah, its one of the few years that black metal probably came out on top, which also kind of indicates why it was a pretty weak year for metal. Nattens Madrigal, Under the Sign of Hell, Eld, The Third Storm of Cythraul being the best the genre had to offer. That being said there werea few other good albums that came out like Fearless Undead Machines, Unchain the Wolves, Darkside, Ophidian Wheel, Forever Underground, Dismember's Death Metal etc. but yeah overall a pretty weak year that i'm not really dying to get to.
