BTW, you guys use the term "wank" alot... what exactly are you talking about? Technical playing that isn’t good songwriting or what?

"Wank" = technicality for technicality's sake, without any songcrafting. Like most shred solos, where there's little relative to the rest of the song, it's just about "look what I can do!"

And why can there be no technical black metal? Is there something in black metal that
makes it so it MUST be simplistic?

Black metal is not about musicianship, or at least obvious musicianship. It's about atmosphere and overall songwriting. Hellhammer (from Mayhem) is one of the most talented metal drummers that's ever lived, but in Mayhem he condenses his talent into well-executed simple ideas, as opposed to playing "Wipe Out" for an hour. He could easily play like Richard Christy if he wanted to, but why? The same goes for many BM musicians... Samoth (Emperor, Zyklon) is a devastating guitarist, but rather than wank he uses his talent to create a wall of sound that supports everything else.

Basically "technical" is in direct opposition to "atmospheric". If you're listening to the playing itself, you can't be "absorbed" in the overall experience.

Well my dislike of thrash might be simply because I havent heard much... Pretty much just metallica (old stuff). I KNOW that they are worthless now (I was cracking up all the way through the little I heard of St Anger) but was their old stuff (MOP, RTL, etc...) a good representation of thrash or have I only heard bad stuff?

Metallica's first 3 albums are good representation of Thrash from the 80's but thats it nothing beyond MOP... before i list some thrash albums/bands.. what they mean by "wank" is someone who plays fast guitar leads all over the song like he's jerking off (Yngwie Malsteen and his countless copycats from the 80's is a example)... as for technical BM.. there is such a thing.. one musician that comes to mind is HellHammer from Mayhem or Frost from Satyricon/1349 as far as drummers goes.. other people can give examples of guitarists, bassists etc..

Thrash :

Metallica - Kill Em All
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Megadeth - Peace Sells but Whose Buying
Death Angel - Ultra-Violence
Death Angel - Act III
Death Angel - Art of Dying
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Exodus - Fabulous Disaster
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned
Nuclear Assault - Survive
Slayer - Show no Mercy
Slayer - Hell Awaits
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Slayer - South of Heaven
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
D.R.I. - Crossover
D.R.I. - Four of a Kind
D.R.I. - Thrashzone
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends (as well as their other albums)
Sacred Reich - Surfin Nicaragua
Sacred Reich - American Way
Sacred Reich - Ignorance
Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare
Motorhead (the granddaddies of thrash)- Ace of Spades
Motorhead - Overkill
Motorhead - Orgasmatron
Motorhead - 1916
Motorhead - Iron Fist
Motorhead - (Pretty much all their albums but these are best to start with)
Testament - The New Order
Testament - Legacy
Testament - Practice What You Preach
Testament - Souls of Black

There are other bands and albums but they escape my mind today because i have the flu.. but the list i gave you is a good start.. might change your mind about Thrash in general...

If you like the ambiance, check out Ved Buens Ende. Great band. Side project I think, members from darkthrone, arcturus. Great band, can't reccomend enough. Black Metal by the way...

Averse Sefira's Homecoming's March album is recommended as well. Fast asskicking BM/thrash riffage.

How does Battle's Clarion compare to Homecoming's March?
More violent, stronger death metal influence, rhythms aren't quite so "rigid", structures flow better (and change more frequently), real drummer instead of a machine. Overall, just a much stronger album.

Be on the lookout for their new album, coming in a few months... it's going to TRULY own your ass, guaranteed.

Averse Sefira rules. The pride of Texas, though I wish they were in San Antonio instead of Austin... all we have is fucking Thornspawn.

Me rocking out in my Averse Sefira shirt...

I know that BM is all about ambience (which is more important to me than technicality by far... that's why I enjoy BM so much), but it seems that there could be a BM band with ambience that *happens* to be technical... not technical with ultraflashy solos but rather just complex patterns and such that ADD to the ambience.

That's for the reccommendations guys... keep them coming :)

Wow that Averse Sefira was a great reccommendation. EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks guys!!!

Averse Sefira fuckin' ripps. Nice shirt and bass guitar, man. How much was that beast?

16 fucking hundred dollars. o_O Had to go all the way to Houston to get it, at a place called Southpaw Guitars (I'm left-handed, as you can tell, and yes, it's gay). But that thing is my baby, it's a part of my playing almost.

(Will post pics of my super sexy Carvin 6-String Fretless as soon as my band plays more gigs... $2300 for that bitch, it better be sexy!!)

Dude, check out Soilwork's "The Chainheart Machine". Plenty of incredible, tasteful technicality. The solos are impressive and you can actually hum along to most (a lost art these days). Trust me, check out this record.
