Good string gauge?

I want to tune my guitar to CGCFAD, but I hate the feeling of loose strings. I don't want to go overboard with insane thickness either (like the Zakk Wylde strings that'll bust your fucking nut in half). What strings do you recommend? What about for my bass?

Ernie Ball does a Beefy Slinky 11-54 set that would work great for that tuning! Check it out...

I feel like such a dork because I've been playing guitar for 13 or 14 years now, but have never had a nice guitar or one that's even set up properly. I stopped playing for the past few years and now that I'm getting back into it I've bought a new guitar and want to do things right. Thanks for your help.

+1 on the Beefy Slinky strings. That's what I use when I tune to C standard.

Just put a set of DR 11-50's on and so far i really like them.

I would put Ernies super slinky balls-beefy slinky set also, but with the E string changed to 056.
