Just found this:

http://grendelsound.com/deadroom.htm

I havent any experience with iso cabs besides miking my amp in a closet, which I cant recommend : ) But the Grendel dead room sample, I think sounds superior to the Randall iso cab or the Axetrak samples shown here:

Randall iso (explanation in danish):

Axetrak:

I know the downside with iso cabs is the boxy sound, but the Grendel company claims that their iso dosent have that, because its bigger and they use a lid made of absorption material that eliminates the frequencies, which creates boxy sound.. or something like that ; )...what do think, worth a try?

Nope, I don't like how both sound, and I don't mean tonewise but that kind of sound you get in small enclosures. And it sounds too dead.

Just use impulses and listen through your monitors.

Unless there is significant bass absorbtion in there, it's going to sound boxy. The reason that so many of these things sound bad is that they use foam to suck up the high and mid range reflections, but everything under 150-200ish is left to bounce around which sounds like crap. I bet if you built your own enclosure and lined the whole thing with 6" of OC703 it would sound pretty great.

Hey guys I have to come and defend my product here. I'll just post what I wrote in reply on Gearslutz.

From the metal forum.

Apparently that guy didn't read our website. We don't use foam. I am a self certified acoustician and I would be the first one to tell you how useless foam is. We do not use 703 rigid fiberglass due to the cost however we a very similar just as efficient material. Our lid is not just lined with it, we build a frame in the lid, stuff it with the material and put carpet over it. Sort of like insulation in between the studs of your walls but designed as a bass trap.

Sounds too dead? Hmmm maybe thats why we call it the Dead Room. I highly recommend the use of artificial reverb after the mics when using our product. Actually it's a necessity. Actual rooms which are dead sound bad for tracking. I refuse to track any instrument (guitar amp, drums) in a room which has been "acoustically treated" with the exception of bass traps. Our product allows you to get a very raw guitar tone playing from a real tube head through a real speaker MINUS the sound of a room. You're going to have to leave that important factor up to a reverb unit or plugin.

Also there is a huge difference between our product and another company which manufactures a tiny box with a 6.5" car audio speaker in it. Since when do you hear of a guitar player wanting a tiny speaker in their amps? Might sound OK for cleans however for distortion, never. The essence of a 12" speaker with an overdriven tone is the way it rolls off the highs. Ever hear a metal zone plugged into a stereo? Thats what straight distortion sounds like coming out of an amp and it's upto the speaker to tailor the high end into something more pleasant. A small speaker will just reproduce that and sound like garbage.

I don't recommend taking advice from people who haven't looked into a product far enough.

Any direct questions for me alex@grendelsound.com

Have a great monday guys.

Nah man you can hook up a 100w head to it, just don't turn it up to fucking 8 on the master

Dude, wattage power handling is a load of shit - it's really quite simple, if it sounds like it's distorting/woofing the speaker and pushing it to its limits back off, otherwise you're good. The example that was so often cited to me is the extreme variability in the volume of amps of the same wattage; my old 60-watt 5150 combo easily ran with a 150-watt Triple Rectifier way back when, so wattage is a pretty arbitrary guage of volume potential.

True indeed, I guess in the little box you dont want too much volume anyway. Would just be overkill because the mic would probably make it sound bad at high volumes. Thanks for the reminder Metaltastic ^_^

Hey guys i bought the dead room II iso box last week and once i payed via paypal this alex guy disappeared, wrote him like 4 emails and there is nooo answer so i'm fearing the worse now (bye bye 779$),so...does anybody know him? some experience?? i hope it's just he's been busy, ill or whatever but well it's been a week without any response :(

Holy shit dude, that sucks - not the best way to run a company! I can only hope he had some sort of big emergency. Honestly though, I'd rather use impulses than an iso cab (or a 1x12 cab, preferably rear-mounted)

this aparently happens a lot with him.

hes not stealing your money, hes just a tard who can't return emails.

Well I transferred US $994 (including shipping to Norway) through Paypal in September 2008.. Still haven`t heard from the guy, have tried calling him as well but no luck.
If I don`t hear from the guy very soon something drastically needs to be done.

hi again,i write this just in case somebody wants more info about this guy.
As i said before i payed the guy and then he disappeared,well...i made a reclamation on paypal and he wrote there this:
"Hi David this puts us in a pickle here because I just sent the cabinet out today via USPS. I'm sorry for the extra delay but it took extra long for the production of the new cabinets. I was also waiting on an order of Celestions for quite a long time..."
Then he wrote this:
"Also David my ISP for grendelsound.com rejects a lot of e-mails that are sent, did you ever get any e-mails returned to you because I am having a hard time finding any from you in my inbox. I'm sorry for not contacting you about this delay sooner..."

I replied that i would wait for the cab and then i would quit the reclamation.Nothing arrived for 2 weeks so i didn't quit the reclamation, paypal gave me directly without any question a total refund, first a 90% and then the 10% left.
I would like to note that those 2 answers from him are the only 2 times he talked to me after paying the cab, through paypal resolution center though.. and he lied about it.

So that's it,just wanted to share my experience with other people here.

Very sorry to hear about your experiences guys. Always disappointing to hear about the lack of professionalism from certain people.

At the end of the day you kind of come to expect that from a person who refuses to track anything in acoustically treated rooms
