Guilty Pleasures

I also like Asia...and Toto...and Poison...and Dwight Yoakam...and Junior Brown (who is an amazing guitarist by the way)...let's not forget Cinderella...

I'll think of some more when I peruse through my cd collection.

well i think when people say guilty pleasures that they mean something you like that is generally ragged on by the majority of the people in your surroundings, not necessarily that you are ashamed of it but just other people, as a general rule, dont like it.

This thread did better than I expected! It's nice to see some of you guys like Bon Jovi. I have to say Christina is better than Jessica, though. I mentioned Amon Amarth on the general music board and got laughed at, so I'll add them to my list here. I think they are great, so fuck the naysayers.

METALLICA ST. ANGER! There, I said it. I FREAKING LOVE ST ANGER!!!!!!!!!!!! I even asked for another copy for Christmas because the first disc got all scratched up in the car cd player! Guilty? As all hell!
Ted
You sound relieved to get that off your chest, Ted!

Weird Al. I have been a fan since the 80's and own most of his stuff. I think I am the only person I know who likes him as much, or will at least admit the fact.....

Also just about any cover tune that has been punked/rocked/or metalized from the original.

You're not the only one who appreciates Amon Amarth! I also like them very much, even if I don't have their complete disco yet (The Avenger and The Crusher are still missing). But I'll certainly get all of their stuff as soon as my financial situation allows me to do so. So if you are to feel guilty for loving them I will happily share your fate.

Winger rule and I love Miles Away, awesome ballad! Great video too! :)

So many people are listing hair bands as guitly pleasures, you should embrace liking it, that stuff rocks!

I'm not really embarrassed or something. It's just that nowadays people make you feel like you're branded when you tell them that you like hair bands. Sometimes they look at you like you'd be from outer space! It's funny, 'cause in those moments I wonder what future people might think about the laughers of today when they tell them about how good Nu Metal is/was.

Ohh and Desmond Child is *the* best songwriter of all time, nothing to be ashamed of there.
Uhm, don't think I can agree. He tends to make songs too soppy sometimes. Have you ever heard Discipline? Just think of Love On A Rooftop or Obsession and you'll know what I mean. I think that this guy has the talent to write perfect hooks and melodies. But he has the tendency to ruin songs by forcing them into a radio-friendly scheme. I think Child is best when he works with other writers. Just think of Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Kiss, Bonfire or Alice Cooper...

Yeah I just think he has the perfect touch at making a song into "hit" material, that is his skill. Depending on who he's working with it can be bad but generally it means taking a good song and making it GREAT because he knows how to write the perfects hooks and melodies as you said.

Most of Kiss & Bon Jovi's best songs were co-written by him in my opinion, and have you heard the "Saints & Sinners" album by Kane Roberts? That was all co-written by Des and has the best choruses ever put down on record! :)

Man, you are a true genius! Now I know what I'll try to track down next, haha! I can't tell why but I somehow missed out on that one. Seems even more odd when you know that I have his Phoenix Rising-disc. Thanks for the hint.
Still I have to argue with you about Child. Indeed, many of Kiss & Bon Jovi's best songs were co-written by him. But I doubt that this is just because of Child's skills. I'd say that's because there were always at least two - in the case of Bon Jovi three (with Sambora) - excellent songwriters working together on the songs.

Yeah you definitely should track down Saints & Sinners! The track "Fighter" alone is worth getting the album for - it has my favourite chorus ever! Then put that with tracks like "Twisted", "Rebel Heart" and "Wild Nights" also with MASSIVE choruses and then the great ballad "Does Anybody Really Fall In Love Anymore?" which also the hardest rocking, most massive chorus I've ever heard on a ballad, and you can't go wrong!

let's see.
I like games workshop roleplaying
classical music (not all)
the band Green Jelly
I collect action figures.
I like varius classics in spanish (language) music

I HOPE THAT ALL YOU CONTENDERS OUT THERE DONT SAY AT THE END OF THIS:

WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Desmond Child a genius?! WTF?! A few weeks ago people were referring to Bob Rock as the "band killer" or something like that... And people were asking for his head. Desmond Child has done more harm to Rock N Roll than Bob Rock has. Look at what he did to Ratt?! Talk about the "pussification" of a band?! I have no problems with what he did with Bon Jovi, becuase I expected nothing more that the equivalent of a fuckin' shit filled "twinkie" when I heard anything by them, but Ratt?! "Pussification!"

First off: I didn't call Child a genius but our beloved Melbourne-based Trooper, hehehe! :tickled: :tickled: :tickled:
Anyway, I don't know anything about this Bob Rock headhunting... Probably wasn't around yet. But I guess I would have objected. Rock's works with Mötley Crüe kick ass massively and I also like the black album's production. Thick as fuck! Okay, St. Anger is a different story, but then again - wasn't it Lars himself who proudly announced how he accidentally came over that snare sound? I seriously doubt that a producer - even with a reputation like one Rock has - could make Metallica sound so shitty without the band's agreement!
As for Child... Well, opinions are like assholes - everyone has one and very often they stink! Fact is, that there are tons of songs by artists like Bon Jovi, Kiss, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper etc. which were all co-written by him and which certainly rock. No doubt about that! Pussification might be a problem, yes. But again I don't believe that a producer could turn vets like the above mentioned into something they don't want to be.
...Oh, and btw - I like Detonator. What's wrong about that one?

Detonator is by far my favourite Ratt album.. I love every album up to Ratt & Roll ALOT (Ratt were far & away the most consistent "hair band" of the 80s!) but Detonator has an extra quality the others don't have which I think came at the hand of Desmond Child and that's an extra catchiness and sense of melody. And also, even though the album isn't as heavy as their first 3, you cannot blame Desmond Child for their "pussification" if you could even call it that, because Reach For The Sky was their softest and most "pussified" album and that came before Detonator!

Personally, I think Bob Rock and Desmond Child are great at what they do. You can blame them for certain band's changes if you like but that's really just avoiding putting blame on the band themselves and you know why? Because it is the band who hires them as producers or co-writers and they know what they are getting into, and they do it because they WANT the more commercial appeal out of their songs or album production and those 2 guys just happen to be great at doing it. It's the band who is in charge of their musical decisions, people like Bob & Desmond work for the band and just help them achieve what they want.

When it comes to picking faves my vote goes for Out Of the Cellar but as for the rest of what you said I totally agree. There's really nothing more needed to be said.
Btw I also like the works of Jim Vallance (writer) and Michael Wagener, Bruce Fairbairn & Beau Hill (producers) a lot. You guys can bitch as long as you want, fact is that these people delivered!
