Is there a program on the net that I might be able to use with my computer and electric guitar to substitute for an amp and a pedal?

I've been looking for one myself (and found one, "guitarfx, v 2.18, which seems the most popular), but it's crap. Trust me. There's no substitute for a pedal or an amp or recording tools (?) such as the line 6 POD.

My friend had a program for SBlive sound card.. Distortion effects wasnt that good but it had great acoustic tones,and other fancy effects.. I'll try to find out when I see him online
I have a SBlive card, and some of the ambience effectswrok well with the guitar. And tho some say they nothing can compare to an amp and pedal, I haven't them money. But I have very good speakers, so there will be no lack of power and clarity etc.
