I know this might be a little off topic but I figured I would get a good response from you guys in here. I am looking to buy a guitar. I have been interested in learning and know the time is right. I have about $500 to spend. I was wondering if you guys could give me any recommendations. Thanks.

So I guess that means you're interested in an electric.

Well, the choices are incredibly broad, even in that particular price range.

I'd recommend going down to a local guitar store and trying things out. Don't be worried cause you can't play, half the people in that store can't either; and you're actually interested in buying one.

well, i started out playing a little $180 Epiphone, which wasn't bad, because I wasn't worried about my action height, string gauge, truss rod, and so forth because I was just getting the basics down. About 3 months later, I went down and bought a Squier Subsonic (it's a baritone, made for playing in low tunings) for $500. BEST GUITAR I EVER BOUGHT, and I currently own a Les Paul Studio Gothic, and a Jackson SLSMG Soloist.

Epiphone black beauty is a fucking awsome guitar, should be able to find it for around 400 us, just cheaper wood and you might have to adjust the action

any gibson fakes by Epiphone are good: les paul studio, gothic studio, sg, some jacksons area cheap too.

You might be able to find a gibson les paul for about 350-500 used

I play a BC Rich Bich with a Widow headstock and a blue-sunburst-over-black body. It's a great guitar. A ray of sunlight came down and shone on it in the guitar store when I picked it up. And when I played it... like playing butter. Oh so nice.

Very much like this, with a better paintjob. :)

I bought it for around $350, and it's a beast for playing death metal stuff, especially with an HM-2 pedal.

Something to think about.

jackson guitars are also fucking awesome (or charvel, their little sister). i started on the charvel, very affordable and most of all robust, you can throw it around as much as you like. opeth also uses jackson guitars on the first two records. they're like BC Rich, without the glamour - really fast and really 'metal'.

i just got an ESP LTD Viper 301, best guitar i have ever played i love this guitar so much i traded my gibson Gothic SG for it, and wouldnt think about trading back, its amazing EMG HZ pickups, rosewood/mahogany fretboard, mahogany body, stop bar tail piece, white binding and see-thru red finish, its an amazing axe, the list on this was only 679, but they were gonna sell it for like 480

I've got a "bronze series" BC Rich Warlock, it's pretty shitty (made in China, so it's not a 'long term, serious musician' guitar). paid $550 AUS, but its 'worth' $700 AUS

Bumblefoots Musicman/ernie ball JPM is fucking sweet, but my 'dream guitar' is an Ibanez RG3120 Prestige, christofer malmstrom from darkane has one. Sweet guitah

because it has such a better feel and sound to me its worth it the guitar is amazing, fits me perfectly i know it was a down trade i payed a grand for the sg and this was only retail at 679 so......but i dont really care i like it a whole lot more

I have heard from alot of people that the BC Rich's really aren't quality guitars and aren't very good for serious players... add that to the ridiculous shapes and well that gets me staying away from em :).

The most radical shape I can handle is the Jackson RR... but I mean c'mon, how can you not, just about every guitarist in metal has just about one of these, haha.
