opeth aren't bad at all. if you come from death metal, at first they sound "light" and boring. the riffs aren't that powerful, the songs are slow moving and LOOONG.
but once you get in the vibe, once you realize it's "comfy" music, meaning music you put on when you want to relax in a couch or whatever, instead of headbanging music, then you really come to appreciate them.
their last album is GREAT in this way.

for those who tried them and found them boring, check out the album Disarmonia Mundi - Nebularium
the first song (2nd to the intro) has the most KICKASS riff i've heard in a long time, and the whole thing reminds me of opeth for some reason.
overall they're (somewhat) melodic death metal

Opeth are great. And I don't think they are boring at all live from watching my Lamentations DVD... Plus a friend of mine seen them live twice and his opinion was that on the DVD they looked really casual and didn't do much in front of the camera, but off the camera at the shows he seen there was a lot more energy and they slayed. So I'd say you are in for a good treat
