it's just making a copy, and technically that is illegal

Well, I don't know about New Zealand, but here in Finland it IS legal to make a couple of copies "for own use". And that means exactly like car stereos, workplace or shit like that.

I myself just put the cd in my cd-rom drive, started MusicMatch Jukebox and clicked "record" and in about 3minutes I had them songs in mp3.
