When: January 27, 2010
Where: Borders Books @ Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I got there at 8:05am with two of my friends, and the store opened at 8am. We found the end of the line for books and wristbands with the help of a very kind Borders associate. The line went at moderate pace, and we got to the register after about 20 minutes or so. Not bad! Before we got to the register, we were handed one of these:

Good to be well-prepared! It would be discovered a few hours later that either people didn't read these things, get them, or know anything about the signing until they saw a sign on the door that day. People brought guitars and other memorabilia. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

We went upstairs and BSed with the WMMR staff for a bit, then wandered around Philly until around 10:30 or 11am. First, we went in to some bowling alley that was across the street from the store. Pretty fancy... I didn't take any pictures because I had to find a bathroom. HAD TO! We went to a mall, and I had sushi for breakfast. Yeah, you read correctly. After this, we made our way back to Borders and decided to go to the FYE on the opposite corner. Here, I picked up (for FIVE DOLLARS?!) the first season of 'The Dead Zone'. Sweet.

I was tired of wandering around, so we went to the 3rd floor and sat around for what seemed like a decade. They started to line up the sections (obviously A, then B), then we waited around some more... and more... and more... Ozzy showed up, people freaked out, everyone was running around. I just kept repeating to my friends "relax people, we'll see him soon enough" Yes, the man is a living legend, but relaaaaaaax. At around this point (or before? kinda foggy...) they announced that he won't be doing personalizations. Oh well, this is understandable.

As someone else pointed out in another thread, they handed out around 1,400 wristbands. This doesn't guarantee that everyone would get a book signed, either. Let's do a bit of math here. 50 people would be in each letter group. 50 for A, 50 for B, etc. I saw a few people with Q on their bracelet. Q is the 17th letter of the alphabet. 50x17 is 850. People could get 3 books, so if we just assume that everyone got 3 books (chances are they didn't, but for the sake of argument...), that would come to 2,550 books. Now... 850 person number is far less than the 1,400 wristbands given out. Let's just pretend that all 1,400 were able to get their books signed. If 1,400 people got 3 books a piece?! That's 4,200 books! If he sat there, asked you your name, wrote it in each book, that would severely decrease the time for people to get books signed. OK, ENOUGH ABOUT THAT SHIT!

E was called, so we went up there. Here's some pictures of us douchebags.

Oh, here's one of my signed books:

Also, Steve only wanted 1 book. I gave him money for 2 more. Sooo that means that I got 5 signed Ozzy books. One for my mom, one for my friend Andrew. They both wanted to go, but couldn't. One is definitely for me... Now, I have 2 extras. No I don't plan on selling them (yet), so don't ask.

:D

Thanks for reading!

If this was for wednesday only though, 1400 people in a day or even half that... I get why he can't pose of course, but it still kinda ruins the intimate personal energy you should get from getting a book signed.

Not at all, I went to a Hulk Hogan book signing, and he took a few seconds to talk to you, was really friendly, happily signed your book (and even personalized mine even when the Barnes And Noble person told him he couldn't. He gave them a very mean look, evidently you don't tell Hulk Hogan no.). I'm sure Ozzy was at least somewhat like that, I mean, even if he wasn't, you were 3 ft. from the man, the legend, while he signed YOUR book. It can't really get too much more personal than that.

yes, it sucks... look at it this way: every signature is different. he signed the books for ME. he signed over 3.000 books. try signing your name 3000 times in2 hours. TWO HOURS

So long as you had a good time, I got nothing to complain about. Cheers man, you're gonna have a damn good read or two in the navy now.

It's about immortalizing the celebrity in a piece of paper. All signatures are different, so you essentially get a second of their existence frozen in time forever. That, and they also get more and more valuable as time goes on. The fact that I own things that people I admire took the time to do is priceless, though. Yeah, you can buy a magazine with a copy of their signature on it... but they signed an image once, but it wasn't for YOU. My autographs are all for me, no one else. That is, save for the Hollywood icons that died before I was born. You get the idea, though.

I never really understood the autograph thing. If I want someone's illegible scrawl on a piece of paper I can get that for the cost of a $25 co-pay at Kaiser.

I'm so with you on that... In fact, many times at concerts/ festivals/ tours I actually had to ask band members "not to ruin my CD with the marker, and no thanks Im good, I dont want the signed copy.. really no its fine!"
lol

While I have many friends who are like Will, and love autographed stuff, for me, unless it's a personal dedication, I don't want it.
I have some priceless shit signed - but it's always personal... much gooder.

On another note: Look it's Ozzy!!!

You're always up in here lauding your ability to stay above the petty masses.

I say you're not so cold and this is all but a show!
