I was watching Fox News the other day (mainly for comedic value), when one of the presenters had an argument that I couldn't help but agree with.

He stated that if US citizens want socialized health care, they're going to have to pay for it through higher taxes, just like the rest of the world. He stated that the Dems plan of taxing just the rich will never work, as we all know that when the rich get taxed higher, so does everyone else.

IMO, it's up to you. Do you want to continue with the HMO thing, with paying every single month for health care insurance if you can afford it, or would you be willing to pay higher taxes for overall health coverage, no matter what the ailment and peace of mind knowing you will be taken care of no matter what?

It's a serious debate and I can understand why the rich would be against it. They can afford great health care coverage and wouldn't have to pay higher taxes for everyone else. I can also understand the rest of the country's citizens who don't make tons of money, feeling like why should they have less health care simply because they don't earn enough money. We're all human beings, after all.

Discuss.

well, i owuldnt want higher taxes in general, i would go for something like raisning taxes on CIGS, or other things that cause health probs. sure, that would work.

I pay 70 dollars a month for my coverage. I had surgery a few months back and it still costed a couple thousand from my pocket, in the form of co-pay....some of my meds costed me upo to 50 bucks in co pay....crazy shit.

The solution here is to be in demand enough to warrant a good job with health coverage.

Anyone who would trust the government - a government that 'accidentally' flies a B-52 with six nuclear warheads over the country, can't build decent fucking levees, can't outfit its army, can't collect intelligence, and can't get approval ratings higher than room temperature in Celsius because it's too busy sucking its own cock from the 2008 elections - with their health care is, to put it bluntly, too gullible to be worth a dime of public money.

JBROLL..>>>sounds like jellybellyfat roll to me. Shut the fuck up you dumb dick. Government sucks, but your sucking teh cock of teh government just like everyone else.....You went t o school, you drive on roads etc...

i have a good job, insurance PERIOD is gettin out of hand. Mainly cause dumb fucks like you rip the companies off.

Go crawl up yer dads ass, hug his colon and think about it for a while.

You sound like an excellent person to have an intelligent debate with.

I went to a private school. I pay tuition. I do drive on roads, but those same roads could have been built by private industries - and more than likely, a lot better. I'd rather have them do it - and then have someone I can really hold accountable, and that has to work to keep its place in the market as opposed to a guaranteed monopoly like a government. Say what you want about me 'sucking teh cock of teh government', you're 'sucking teh cock of teh capitalism' - and one seems to be much more efficient in terms of progress and efficiency. If I'm paying for it, I'm going to fucking use it - I just want a better deal.

I don't see where you're gathering that I'm a 'dumb fuck', and you're certainly coming across as no genius yourself. I also don't 'rip the companies off' - is doing business ripping people off? News to me.

I would accept higher taxes, as I have ailments that flare up every now and then and insurances costs so much it may be cheaper to raises the taxes instead where I live.

Dude, 70 bucks a month isn't too bad for coverage! That co-pay is another story, however.

Just as a reference, surgery here would cost you a couple hundred bucks if you were in a higher tax bracket. Lower tax bracket, it's free. It's something to think about and weigh. Maybe it would be done differently in the US, but that's basically the system in almost all of Europe...France is even better.

IMO, if you're paying 70 bucks a month and STILL have a co-pay of a couple thousand, that's just retarded.

welcome back to the board ledman :p

i pay about $70 a month for mine as well, but it's crap. pretty much screwed if you need anything other than a routine check-up. i'd opt for higher taxes, fo' sho'...i don't see a program like that happening for a very long time though. my bursitis will have gotten the best of me by then :loco:

government jobs provide pretty good health care coverage though. my dad works for the post office and for the first 22 years of my life we never had to pay more than $200 out of pocket for anything.

I'll agree with you there; if you work for the gov't, you're in like Flynn.

It's a shame that the gov't will take care of you if you work for them, but they won't do shit for you since THEY WORK FOR YOU.

It opened my eyes the day I was debating with a friend here. I was defending the US health care policy when she asked me, "If you have something terrible happen to you and you need dire medical attention, but it's not covered by your insurance, you'll have to pay out of pocket for it, right? What if it's $50,000? That means you're going to have to sell your house just so someone whose job it is to keep you alive won't let you die." At that moment, my whole perspective changed. I never thought about it like that and now I cannot fathom the concept of, "I'll save your life because you have enough money to pay me."

It really is a shame that there is a multi-billion dollar business designed to keep you in fear of dying.

Yep, its called Jesus.

Yeah, but that's up to the sheep; they can choose to worship a groundhog and still live a healthy life if they want to. If you have brain stem cancer and you can't pay for it, you're fucked. Even if they operate on you and fix it, you're going to pay for it for the rest of your life.
