any recommendations for heavy prog metal without the whiny vocals??how bout zero hour? i haven't heard them so i have no idea what kinda vocals they use

I believe that Cynic do have Prog elements to their music, although definately more a technical Death metal band.
Also Gordian Knot(Sean Malone) which are an instrumental outfit including the talents of Myung(dream theatre), Masvidal(cynic, Gobel(Cynic), Reineart(Cynic) to name a few..........superb stuff!
Mekong Delta, perhaps you may not like these due to the whiney like vocals but the music is amazing.
Spastic ink, brilliant instrumental technical metal band, no vocals......
Many more but i cant think now....

Have you tried Symphony X? Russell Allen can sing high, whiny notes, but he has a much wider range than most prog vocalists.

Can't you say that most prog bands practice "self-indulgence" ?
These bands might not be heavy enough either but I figure it's worth a listen.

I can't stand these vocals, too! Best example is Pain of Salvation: I read everywhere that their latest album is so great and so on, so I bought it. The voice really ruined the CD (well the music wasn't good either), you know this high-pitched Dream Theater-style crap.
So, that's difficult...other metal bands that are somewhat progressive are maybe Kong (instrumental), the Devin Townsend projects Terria and Ocean Machine (not _that_ heavy) or Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects.

hmm...i heard evergrey and nevermore and i didn't like the vocals for both...seems like some ppl hate them too! but some are okay with it..i guess andromeda is not too bad though

Prog meets classical music meets thrash metal. Pretty fucking excellent! I've only been able to acquire four of their albums, Music of Erich Zann, Kaleidoscope, Dances of Death and Principle of Doubt. The best of those I've found to be Dances of Death but they're all amazing.
As for heavy prog metal, I'd definitely recommend later Voivod, especially Phobos. Also Atheist, Pestilence, later Gorguts, later Death, Cynic, Demilich.

Remedy Lane rocks! I also disliked the vocals at first and I still wouldn't mind if they were a bit deeper, but I can't say it ruined the music for me. I couldn't listen to it all day, but the vocals don't bother me anymore. I like it as it is.

Try EVERGREY! They are an incredible band... "In Search Of Truth" was my favorite album from 2001. And in my opinion, Tom Englund is one of the top vocalists in metal... very soulful tone.

Right on! I also fucking hate this lame dream theatre and pain of salvation crap as well, that crappy "oh look at me in my fit of self-indulgent musical masturbation, I'm so sensitive and serious and emotional, I'm going to cry now, boo-hoo-hoo, I'm so cool and worldly" bullshit makes me want to wretch feces. I find it FAKE and FORCED and therefore not real music. That sort of music reminds me so much of something like Celine Dion, ewww.
