I agree.. Daniel has an amazing range and versatility... and can portray such an incredible magnitude of melancholy emotion.

POS often takes a couple tries to appreciate... it took me awhile... and now they're my favorite band. They truly have opened up a whole new world of music for me. I can't even imagine what life would be without them.

If anything death vox and growls are the most forced, fake and theatrical "singing" around. Not that I don't like it but condemning singers who actually HAVE VOCAL LINES is just ignorant.
I mean when you hear someone doing death metal vox is just like they are saying "We are really tough and scarry because I'm singing really low like a horrible frightening monster... Grrrrrr...."
Singing began both to convey a actuall message and to be musical. Enough so that it could stand on its own. But with death vox the second part is clearly gone and the kind of messages are limited by the style of singing. You know most bands are like "well I'm growling so I have to sing about something bad or upsetting."

We were talking about the style, not the content of the lyrics, but I will endulge this:

It depends on how the lyrics are written and how they are sang. If the lyrics are cheesy and mindless and the guy is whining about it, then yes, it's fake bullshit, that's what a lot of top 40 crap is all about. But to them it's probably not fake, they are probably cheese-lovers who grew up listening to Dream Theatre thinking that that is the pinnacle of artistic integrity (instead of the poser 80's cheese-rock that it is). hehe

Aside from this, what's with this name "Pain of Salvation"? Of all the cheesy lame band names I've ever heard in my life, this one takes the grand prize. With such an idiotic and commerical name I would expect nothing less from them than cheesy whining "boohoo, look how cool I am for being such an emotional guy" bullshit, and singing about "your own infidelity, the miscarriage of your child, and the suicide of someone you knew" is exactly the kind of subject matter that falls right in line with this whiney and commericalized emotional crap.

I think when some of you guys who like this stuff get a little older (like when those of you who are in your teens are out of your teens) you'll look at it differently. Even I used to like Dream Theatre, as embarassed to admit that as I am, it's true.
