8 string guitars are for guys who just want to try to impress someone by saying they play an 8 string guitar. Reality is they play a one string guitar maybe two but not much more than that. There are a couple exceptions but not many.

Exactly....if you play a 8 string you're gonna sound so "meshuggah" and really boring.
And if you have these guitars, you're forced to play always low in a subtle way
It just show how people today 1st think in COPY before think in CREATE.
That argument is so ridiculous because sounds as don't could be apllied for 6 strings.
read and believe in it make me think in a world where every guitarrists are just clones of the first 6 stringers.
make me imagine a world where everybody who have a les paul play exatly like the inventor, who gives the name to the instrument.
Please peole, Go listen another music than metal and come back when have something really intresting there.

i am not really interested in 8 strings with lower strings, but I really dig 8 strings with a high A string. that is what i have on my conklin, very cool when working with a keyboard player

I think schecter makes some nice instruments and I don't take issue with the number of strings but I am really tired of that black cherry finish.

It's cool... but to me it's more novelty than anything. I still think it's awesome, but to me it's kinda like a "one trick pony".
Although - Some of Bulb's shit is pretty intense, and he uses an 8 for some songs.

Didn't Wes Borland play a 4 string back in the day? Had like 2 bass strings and 2 guitar strings or some shit. He brought the brutalness.

Check out Ihsahn's second solo album AngL, where he uses an 8-string guitar and it's not Meshuggah in any way

well, you know or at least know of jim molina right? i work with him a lot. most of the time, when we are doing project for a specific record label, there is a lot of keyboard/guitar harmony parts that he writes. when he does this, the high A makes it much easier to play either in unison or the harmony to what he is playing due to his crazy sequences. He does some really awkward things for guitarists (when he plays keys) to play. It helps a lot

quite a lot of haters on here... I don't even play an 8 string. I tried it out for a while, but sold it, learned first hand that I prefer 7 strings and a 25.5" scale... but sersiously, what's up with all the haters? some people like the extra range and write some really interesting music with it... how does that affect you at all? are those narrow minded opinions really so important that they just MUST be heard?
