HELP!!Is it possible to resample a kick drum after it is on CD??

And after listening it honestly sounds like any other demo recording from 8-9 years ago. I don't see what the problem is really.

Not to take anyone's side, so please don't view this like that. But...I love how when a band doesn't understand production or that practicing really makes a difference, or tuning the drums, making sure to get the guitar(s) and bass setup, etc. etc. etc. all before going in to record, and when the end product isn't all that great they blame the engineer. It takes two to tango, as they say. An engineer can only do so much to make the best of what he/she is given. And also given the fact that it was 8-9 years ago, I know there were not nearly as many tools available back then as there are today. I wasn't there during that project, so I won't make a judgement on either parties involved, but really I mean 8 or 9 years ago...just re-record it and don't come on here bashing some dude. For all we know his side of the story is completely true...it can go either way. If we're going by his side, you guys came in with SS amps, untuned drums and not nearly up to par on giving a tight performance, and if that is true then what exactly did you expect to come out of it? If his side is truthful, then I feel bad for him because I have been in those situations as well and it sucks. If your side, doc, is true, then I have no sympathy anyway because you should have checked out some of his other work before committing to getting your material recorded with him.

Lol this thread had me laughing from the title onwards... I can see the AE saying the truth, though!

On a personal note (which you can skip, if you've had your share of whining AE stories :D)... I had a similar experience a year and a half ago... It was my first recording of a band, but I have been recording myself and my band for a year then and there was this old-school thrash band (I got 50€ for 6 days of work!!) with a great guitar rig and a shit-load of mental retardation.
The drums were recorded elsewhere and not to a click. I'm thinking, fine, I can manage that... Afterward it came to a point where they wanted me to slow down certain parts and squeeze chorus drum lines somewhere inside and write kicks and all that without a tempo map on 10€/day. If the day were nicer, sure. If their music was of high quality or at least original, sure. If they hadn't acted like total jerks all of the time, sure. But this was not the case. Their behavior was like a text-book definition of an ignorant punk rock-star wannabe. Actually, the worst were the drummer and the bass player, the former being a drunken sarcastic fuck and the latter a narcissist refusing to acknowledge anything that isn't 80s thrash metal music. When it came to tracking the guitars, I suggested we try to find a good sound, since it was in my opinion very muddy. But they were claiming it was the "And Justice For All" guitar sound and so I said to myself: "Fuck it, let's do this." Little did I know that I would rue this recording session till this very day!! At this point, I also have to say that my recording skills were shabbier back then, not to speak of my mixing skills. But at the time when we started recording guitars, I was losing interest in this and their fucked-up personalities weren't helping. To be honest, I just wanted to get it done ASAP, since I knew it was going to be crap anyway.
When it came to mixing, there was this conversation that I had with the bass player/singer, that I will never EVER forget. He said, and I quote: "You know, naturally, as a bass player I want the bass to be VERY present and be heard. It has to have a lot of punch balls and low end, but also it has to have this sparkle and a lot of mids. So you should remix it." And I did. And again. And it came to a point, as you will hear later if you're still following, where the bass was more present than the vocals, the guitars and the drums. Now... I'm a bass player myself and I don't feel the natural urge for the bass guitar to be in your face to a point where the only way you can get it out is with a crowbar. I'm surprised he wasn't whining about the vocals being too soft, when it was all done!!
All in all, it was a ... an experience. Let's leave it at that. I too was younger and not as skilled, but one does have to whine every now and then... Surprisingly a week ago (I have, since the recording of this demo, broken all contact with the band), the bass player/singer contacted me and said if I were ready to record 5 songs for them. There would be 500€ in it for me, but I didn't think I'd be ready for another dose of THAT band. And my artistic vision (modern recording) conflicts with theirs (old-school thrash) so I chose to keep my integrity and refused the offer, telling them to find someone more appropriate. Well, that all being said, here's their page: http://www.myspace.com/eliminatorzorzor As you can hear, the mixing is sub-par too. But I guess the price/quality ratio has been met.

Wow, I needed to let this out! :D

jhanse, that sounds like a fucking nightmare dude, and considering how much disdain I have for most old school thrash (and I think the "Justice" tone is fucking GARBAGE), I don't think I could've survived! My sympathies, but at least it's in the past!

However, I thought you guys would be interested in hearing this: I spoke to my cousin at our family gathering yesterday, and he told me how his band had just recorded an album with a local home-studio guy (much like us on here) - HOWEVER, they recorded the songs they'd been playing live on a weekly basis for years, and were tight as shit on; apparently they came in and tracked 9 songs LIVE in a weekend! And when I told him how much the guys on the forum I go on (this one, obviously, I don't go on any others) would be green with envy to have clients like his band, he said that it was in their own best interests, cuz it was their money they were paying ($20/hour), which of course made perfect sense as well! Ah, if only the rest of people weren't retards...

If it only were the AJFA sound... It was SHIT on a-whole-nother level! :D Well, I guess it's karma, that I've worked with a GREAT band, that has a top notch guitarist and a great singer just last month and am working on a cool band right now!! All cool guys! This business just comes with its ups and downs right? :D

Hehehe yeah! I can't wait for the follow-up either!! :D

Hey, this is the "SOB" that recorded this shitass band. You can go ahead and bash my recording all day long, but you didn't have to try and record this band that had no experience at all. They had shit equipment and could barely play thier instruments. Not only that, but I recorded them twice because they told me "I was the man," so if they thought I was so bad, then why did they come back? Also, These were some of the most ignorant mother fuckers I had ever met. They couldn't play their instruments at all, but thought they were gonna be bigger than slayer or exodus. These are actual facts. They would tell me how awesome they were and then go and help themselves to my fridge without even asking for anything. Heres the real deal. Those are not triggered Kick Drums. His playing was so inconsistant that I couldn't even trigger them. You can hear that there is 2 different tones to the kick drums if you actually listen. I had to mic them and do the best I could with his out of tune kick drums. They didn't know how to tune their drums, or get set ups on their guitars, so no they weren't in tune at all. If you don't want a high end guitar sound, then don't go to a studio with a $100 solid state amplifier and then expect it to sound like an album that was recorded on a Neve or SSL. I charged you $10 per hour because thats what you guys were gonna get for your recording. There was no point to trying to get good tones because you wouldnt have known what a good tone even was. And you never told me shit about what you thought sounded good or bad. Shit in does equal shit out. I wanted you out of my house as soon as I could because I couldn't deal with your childish shit. If you remember, I was also recording a 15 your drummer at the time that blew you away. He could play circles around you on a drumset that was older than him. Do you know why it sounded good? Because he knew how to hit the drums. You were so envious of him that you actually talked shit about a 15 year old kid who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. If you knew how to record anything worth a shit, then you would know you can't replace a kick drum on a cd. What kind of bullshit question is that? If you are so fucking good, then why are you worrying about some 8-9 year old recording you did in a garage? Get over it and rerecord the shitty songs. You want an awesome recording, go to a real studio and don't bug a guy who couldn't stand you and did you a favor. Get over it. I can't even believe I lowered myself to even type something in response to this thread...

Perfect!!!!! Lets set the record straight!!! Our drummer had only been playing for about 2 years and (and he click tracked the other 2 songs we did also) we never seen any other guy "15 year old drummer or whatever" in the studio except us.....you said to help ourselves to the fridge LOLOL...

Has anyone listened to the guitar track on that? he was 16 and thats awesome for 16 its all down stroke...As for triggered kick sound (sampled) ok? the kick might have been out of tune, thanks for helping tune it engineer?? DRUMAGOG ANY ONE??? PLEASE???

Oh yea? that hundred dollar amp you mentioned?? I dont know if your talking about the JCM 900 or the ampeg svt3 probass amp?? Right :goggly:

As for recording twice??We were recorded in a modern studio and we say (ok? we can work with this guy he knows where we are coming from it wasnt bad at all?) Then he takes us to a garage leading us on to believe it could be better!!! Remember we are 16!!

And believe me i know the kick cant be replaced (altho i got close) I just wanted to learn "just in case there is a bad crying for help after getting stabbed" i could make an attempt to help

and with the slayer and exodus comment?? We opened up for exodus and we were 16,17 years old awesome

I did rerecord it and its only one guy this time --- its not perfect but done, there is your follow up

Real professional response, man. Merry Christmas.

While it may be a little unprofessional with the way he approached his response, I can totally understand where he is coming from. He's getting smeared here and I fail to see how doclegion making the thread and making his comments is any different to what the AE did in response to it. I mean, doc posted his MySpace n shit...I can see why the dude would want to defend his name a little bit. And again, for a demo from 8 or 9 years ago it's not too shabby. Sure it could be better, but what couldn't? Again, not taking any sides.

And what are the odds of the AE stumbling across this thread?!?!?!?!? Anybody else ask themselves that yet?

Ooh, surely he must reply after this post.. (cool mix btw).

clearly the bashing of this dude is what has brought him here. i`m sure someone turned him onto this thread. the OP could have said something like "it wasnt the sound we were lookig for" ect. rather than fitting the obvious stereotype of ignorant musician. however its not for any of us to say what happened either way, so arguing is a waste of this forums time. if i was the AE, I would be looking to punch some teeth down some ones throat, but i would do that on my own time. :P

p.s that is shit tone for a jcm 900!!!! wow. not really much you could do with that.

Listen up fuck sticks, this is Rob, doc guitarist (guitarist from the "shitty" band in question)..............Lemmie tell you we were respectful as possible at his place. And yes he offered us to look in his fridge!

Second, no solid state amp ever came in your place from us. I had a 100W JCM900, and 100W JCM800. Nothing solid state.

Good tone? As I recall we had a good time comparing guitar sounds. "needs a little of this, little of that" back and fourth comparing. And yes those songs have some serious down-stroking in them. I WAS 16 at the time, and (not to suck my own dick or anything) wasn't bad at all.

I second that we never saw a 15 year old drummer around there. WE were about that age!

And I believe you've no place to call our music bad considering the "shitty" band you were in at the time! I won't even go there unless I have to.........

Thread delivers and it's only getting better!
I know LOLOLOL
I thought it was a cool mix myself
Oh yea and the JCM900 dont have gain for metal really, we used a metal zone that every kid owns

And from that experience we knew not to record with that

not enough gain??

clean boost, followed by OD pedal. Use an attenuator and crank the fucker to 11. That 900 should have way more than enough.
