Help me decide what treatment to buy

i recommend acoustimac.com if you choose not to go the DIY route. shipping is a bit expensive but i figured it was worth the investment to get well built traps that will (hopefully) last a long time.

I own both acoustimac and GIK traps and they have they each have their advantages and disadvatages. GIK has a built in air gap, are all open back and hang easily with regular picture hooks. Acoustimac has slicker looking fabrics (IMO) and are better for low profile installs. Both are expensive to ship. DIY is certainly the way to go if you have the time and tools.

I know the "proper" thing to do would be to buy a bunch of OC703 and build some absorbers.

I'd like to keep the budget around $200-300 if possible.

Also - best and cheapest way to make some ceiling clouds?

Experiences with any of the above? Thoughts, comments, advice?!

You can do this and it might be cheaper than buying pre-made stuff. Check out this site:

Basically you just buy OC703 panels (2x4 i think?) and slide them into those bags. Piece of cake. I did this for about 20 panels in my studio and it worked awesome and looks good.
For ceiling clouds, I had a friend build me some basic wooden frames that would hold 3 or 4 panels of the OC703. I covered them with bulk fabric on one side, put them in the frames and hung it up. Here are some pics - http://jordanvaleriote.com/wp/?page_id=34

Well guys, for now I ordered a 12-pack of moving blankets. They are fairly big, like 8 ft x 6 ft or so. About $110, shipped.

I grabbed our scrim stands (pvc pipe) from the jam room and used them as a frame, as well as using the closet doors in the recording room. (Closet doors pop off the track and can swing out over 90 degrees). I was basically letting the blankets folded over themselves 4x so they were thick and draping them all around. Still not done, but a quick clap test recording before and after in the "booth" already shows a pretty big difference.

I figured I'd shoot for a make-shift vocal booth for now as that is top priority and worry about the rest of the actual room treatment in the near future. I'll see if I can get some pics up once I get it finished.

I did the moving blanket thing. I still use a few here and there. But I can tell you that my recordings were terrible when i covered the room in these. It sounded good at first (dead) but it skewed my response worse that it already was. When I finally used bass trapping (oc703 or alike minimum 4 inch) my room was much better instantly.

Good to know. I didn't hang them all over the room, just created a little "booth" specifically for vox. I think in the near future I am going to do the OC703 route and try to do it properly.
