Kids are requiring more and more visual stimulation to keep their attention focused on games. This translates to lapses in attention in real world situations (e.g., school, work, real life) that don't provide this kind of stimulation. I find that situations like these really inhibits their intellectual growth. There are so many of my friends that say "I did *insert stupid action* because I was bored" or that have a hard time reading anything worth while because they're constantly looking for a stimulatory fix. Sometimes I just feel like saying "Go outside if your bored! Run, freerun, skateboard, play soccer......Anything! And if it sucks outside, read a book!!!! But don't play 72 hours of WOW a week..."
I think that ADD, although a real disorder, is over diagnosed in our society (at least, it is in North America). I think this is largely due to ADD-like symptoms that are brought on by the sensory overload that we generally become accustomed too, and video games definitely take part of the blame.
That's my two cents anyway; haven't read any journal articles to see if I'm right.
That's just the wrong I see in video games. I find them super fun, but I think too many people use them excessively. It's like anything: nothing is good in excess (except Bloodbath).
I completely agree with you Flal.
But I also think the biggest problem are the parents, all games have their age restrictions, and all parents should't let their kids play more than 1h30m per working day, and let's say 3h at weekend days. The parents are the ones who guide their kids, so they should set rules for them to follow, kids don't have rules, and that's something elementary for humans, no rules=caos, kids should know when and how long they should play video games, and when and how long they should study and be doing somekind of a phisical activity.

First of all, how old are you?
22
Do you play video/computer games? If your answer is yes, go to question 2. If your answer is no, please explain why you don't play computer games.
Yes.
Approximately how many hours per week do you spend playing games?
7h
Do you buy or illegally download your games?
Both.
How often do you buy games?
3 times a year
On average, how much money do you spend on gaming in a year? That includes upgrading your system, buying consoles...etc
I buy a console/upgrade my system every 3 years or so, so dividing 1000 euros by 3 gets us to around 333,3 euros a year.
How often do you download games?
Maybe 3 times a year.
Why do you play video games? (Entertainment, to kill time, to relax...etc)
Because it takes me to places I can't go in real life, it's the same as making/watching a movie, writing/reading a book, but in a more interactive and visual way, also it let's me do some things I would never want to do in real life, like fighting for mankind by killing aliens in other planets or cutting monsters in half, like driving a racing car or fighting in WW2, so it satiates my fantasies, also it relaxes me and when it's done with friends it's great because you share all of the above said with someone else.
Name a good thing and a bad thing about video/computer games.
Good... it can be a very healthy learning experience, I for instance learned the English language through games, many games require knowledge and intelligence to solve the challenges, it makes kids/people dream and imagine, and appreciate good things against bad things, let's you relax and have a good time with your friends and family.
Bad... Certain games like WoW require too much of your time, some games are made uniquely to simulate social life, like SIMS, and I just can't see any good in that, and playing video games for too long is never good, both physical and mentally, like Flal said it can play a solid role in contributing for ADD.
