METALLICA's JAMES HETFIELD: On The New Album

METALLICA's official web site, www.metallica.com, has posted a five-minute interview with frontman James Hetfield in which the singer discusses the songwriting and recording process for their forthcoming album, "St. Anger", due on June 10 through Elektra Records. According to Hetfield, the band have begun the mixing process for the new album and have set aside another three-and-a-half weeks to complete the effort before it is mastered and shipped off to the record company.

"This [album] we're probably the most prepared for [out of all the records we've made so far]," James explained. "Our work is together, the album title, the lyrics are done, [producer] Bob [Rock]''s starting to mix songs. It's coming out in such a relaxed way. Before we were so… It's like we needed to feel the chaos or else it wasn't real. Or we had to punish ourselves by saying, 'That was too easy. Those lyrics came too easy. I need to struggle some more with those just to make them better.' I am so done with that. I'm over that. I know that I can trust our craft and our gift from our higher power that this stuff is just the best that it can be from us right now."

"I'm really looking forward to letting this thing loose," he added. "What an awesome responsibility [to have so many fans anticipating the release of this CD]… And especially now, the way the lyrics are, how really heartfelt they are from all of us, and to have this record start from scratch... No one came in with riff tapes, 'Here I've got a song. This has to go on the record and don't fuck with it,' and all of this ego stuff. For the most part we've checked egos at the door, and tried to keep them out there. So hopefully they leave and go away. And with these riffs just starting from scratch… 'You've got a drum beat? Just lay down a killer beat. Show me what you've got, and just play along with it.' Just feeling it, feeling the power coming from the amp. I mean, I plug in a new amp and write ten new riffs, just really being so open to the freedom. It felt so great to be all on the same page with that . . . It would be impossible [for the fans listening to the album] to not feel that. They might not like the songs, but they might be able to understand the rawness. Bob is afraid to mix [the songs], because he doesn't want to mess with the vibe, or he doesn't want to tweak too much — it's just levels, you know. We can certainly polish a turd (laughs). We can shine it, so it loses its character and flaws and all of its hair and all of its things that make it 'it'.[And it'll be very important for us] to let the songs speak for themselves [and not mess with their raw vibe]."

It's taken you six years, James. It had damn well better be together.

"We can certainly polish a turd...so it loses its character and flaws and all of its hair." That sounds really disgusting. Turds with hair and character. Jesus.

For all my smartassitude, I really am looking forward to hearing this. The direction of Metallica's hype is promising...not the hype itself, but the way they've chosen to present it, as a going back kind of thing. Of course, people are saying "They're just trying to reclaim their old fanbase," but that's what you've been asking them to do for years. It could very well be the next Load (in suckitude, not musical style), but it could just as well be another Justice or Lightning...hell, even Puppets.
Well, probably not Puppets actually. But I'm going to keep my ears and mind open and find out exactly what the hell "earspank" means.

Well that was a lot better speech than Lars  I'll be checking out this album sooner or later, maybe not as soon as it's released, I very rarely do that with any band (just can't afford it!).

I'm one of those guys who don't like the last three albums purely for it's low quality, not for the style. The style is fine, just the execution of it sucked big. I do love the older stuff, as i am a thrash fan and would much rather hear them do what they do (or DID) best and that's play heavy FUCKIN' metal!!! So, needless to say, just for curiousity's sake, this is one of my most anticipated albums of the year.

I wish people would stop talking about metallica. Seriously, they've been an embassment for almost 15 years. 'Its' gone and its not coming back. They're too old and have spent too much time rolling around in their money to ever make a proper intense metal albulm again.
Oh, yeah and that God forsaken producer Bob Rock is still there.

Too old? What about the Stones/Aerosmith/ACDC etc etc etc. WTF does age have to do with it? And btw, wouldn't you love to have Bob Rocks money? I would!

METALLI-ICON
As reported by metallica.com. MTV's annual music tribute event, mtvICON, will spotlight the 20-year career of Metallica. The inaugural mtvICON paid tribute to Janet Jackson in 2001, followed by honorees Aerosmith in 2002. James, Lars, and Kirk were there in 2002 to show their appreciation of the group and to give testimonials on what Aerosmith has meant to them as a band and as people. (Read that article here)
mtvICON: Metallica will tape before a live audience in Los Angeles on May 3rd, and will premiere on MTV on May 6th from 9:00-10:30pm ET/PT. The special program will feature performances and testimonials from artists and celebrities who have been influenced by the band, their music, and their videos. For the finale, Metallica will take the stage for a show-stopping set, marking the band's debut television performance with their new bass player Rob Trujillo. A full list of talent will be announced shortly.

mtvICON is meant to commemorate musical artists for their cumulative contributions and impact spanning their entire career

I can't believe people still care about Metallica, that they still follow them and get excited over a new release, hoping it's going to be good. Get over them. It won't be good. There WILL be numetal influences. If you won't see it coming, then you're not as smart as I am (but that doesn't mean you're stupid, because I am oh so ultra smart, perhaps TOO smart, you shouldn't compare yourself to me!).

~I don't agree that Metallica will take a mall-core direction, but I think Mattias has a point. Everyone was hoping for this great metal album with Load, and look what happened. Do not get your hopes up for this one people, it's better that you expect another Load album than set yourself up for disappointment again. I'll even go so far as to say this,... the new Testament album will completely and utterly destroy the new Metallica. You should already know this, but it bears repeating.

I would, but I'm not sure I'd like his production style. Probably why Wicked Child didn't like the last three studio releases. Great music, overdone production.

I'd rather get Kevin "caveman" Shirley to produce my stuff. He produced and mixed some DT stuff, including their live NYC DVD, and did his magic on the upcoming Iron Maiden album. I'm not saying a producer shouldn't contribute his/her ideas to a band's work, but there should be some limits to it. I can understand if you're a newer act, you may want more hand-holding, but some of the rawness and immediacy that I did like (except for Justice) from pre-Black albums is missing. :(

If I want something refined, I'll just play my Mike Stern, Allan Holdsworth, and Scott Henderson CD's, thanks.
