Hey, I found Johan's double!

Wow, you growl really good.
I'd like to do it too, but I never found the correct technique. It's something kind weird because I can't sing death (just can't make low notes), but I can sing black metal (of course I need more practice in this, I think it can improved a lot yet), and grindcore (not the hyperlownotes, I mean the highers, I can reach very high notes while singing grind, something quite strange, because I just discovered one day that I could do it, I never practised for that).

So it is possible to develop a growling technique that allows one to have a lifelong career as a death-metal singer without trashing his vocal chords?

I once heard that Barney Greenway got his growling skills by gargling lye soap. UGGH!

When AA came to the U.S. I kept getting nervous that ol' Johann might lose his voice and be forced to cancel the tour.

After seeing them live though i became convinced that he just has the right genetics for the job.

Yes, it is, because to growl or shriek, you don't have to scream, you make it by breathing with the diaphragm al closing or opening your vocal chords deppending how you want to sound, of course you have to work it a little with the chords, but it's just a small part, if you do it right, you don't get hurt. Just try until you find the right way to do it, only remember that if your throath hurts, stop! it's because you're doing it wrong and it might end bad.

The first thing you have to do before starting to growl, is learn how to breath with the diapraghm or with the stomach (I only know how to do the first one, but I also read it's possible with the stomach).
Try this: take a slow deep breath, but without expanding your chest, use your hand to control it. You'll see that your belly will inflate like a ballon, it is because instead of using the upper part of the pulmons to expand the chest and inhale, you are using the diaphragm. Hold your breath for a few seconds, and after that release it slowly, try to do it saying a note or just sssss, but always trying to keep it in the same tone; with time, this will help you to control better the air flux in your body, and thats what you have to do to be able to growl and hold notes for long times. Do it a few times until you get used, and after that start singing clean while doing that, and add slowly the distortion to make it a growl.
Just remember that if it hurts, you are doing it wrong or that's your top, don't push yourself more than what you can, and also remember: be patient, you wont learn to growl in one day, it's like everything, the only way to reach perfection is practising.

yes u can, btw dude i've been practicing for 3 years and i got get hurt, and Johan Hegg been singing more than 10 years, so no offcourse not he wont lose his voice in concerts

The throat is more used in black, because you have to close the vocal chords a lot to reach higher notes, but even in those cases, you don't sing a hundred percent with it.
Mostly because you will hurt yourself, and because I doesn't sound as powerful as it gets when you manage the air with the stomach/diaphragm
