Metallica are proabaly just humouring Trivium. Besides Heafy does a different voice from Hetfield. Yes it does sound similar but you can tell whether it is Heafy or Hetfield singing.
Pathetic as in stupid or pathetic as in pitiable? Not that it matters it is both in my opinion.
