Gavin raises a good point... I've said elsewhere that these riots are the result of a decade of piss-poor policing of gangs in the shire and the beach suburbs. This of course spread over all of Sydney, but this was the flashpoint!

Think of it this way though... if the protest hadn't turned violent on sunday, how much time do you think it would have gotten in the news??? Maybe 5 minutes tops.....

Yep, Gav's right. This shit has been going on for fucking years. There are places in Sydney that are no-go zones even for other Arabs because the gangs pretty much rule the street there. The police have known about this for years. As much as it's been pathetic that yobs started bashing anyone who looked at them sideways, this is the best thing that could have happened, because now there's pressure to do something about it. What made me laugh watching the news this morning was that 1000 Lebs went to the Lakemba mosque because they thought the Aussie mob was going to turn up there and attack it. When they didn't, they all jumped in their cars and drove out to the beach and smashed things! How fucking retarded is that? No wonder the Skips went on a rampage.
