The only reason I'm considering this is because it's not typical SoCal commuting. Typical SoCal commuting involves an hour of bumper to bumper traffic and another hour of heavy traffic, each way. This drive would involve mostly mountain driving and open highway, only about 5 miles would involve a lot of traffic.

That doesn't sound bad at all. If you would enjoy this new location, your overall mood will be much more important than waking up a little early to get to work. I actually enjoy a drive like that. Maybe not every day, though. Where is this house you're looking at?

Oh . . . I have to walk about one to one and a half steps out my back door to get to work . . . or I just sit in my home office and do accounting/bookeeping/dicking-off type work.

Idyllwild near Mt. San Jacinto, I have several pictures of the area in my Photography link. Big Bear and Arrowhead both have too many people but Idyllwild is still one of those quiet mountain town types. I might also look into Wrightwood, about the same distance but a shitty drive.
