how many Dream Theater fans are here?

I stopped being a diehard fangirl after Kevin left, and I've been unimpressed with them since 6 Degrees. It's felt like they've been trying to please everybody but themselves (more heavy stuff! no, more weedly weedly three minute guitar solos! no, more hit-oriented music!) for quite a while now.

I agree, after Kevin left they went downhill. Though, I do like FII an aweful lot, and Derek was a great replacement for someone who couldn't easliy be replaced.

I prefer them when they were more song writing oriented and less "Hey, Mom, look what I can do!" oriented. IMO, SfaM, 6DOIT, etc. all display more of them trying to show off and be a really heavy band rather than write a good song and just do what's natural. Too much trying to be Pantera or Metallica or Tool or whoever.

And I agree, Jamie. They are trying hard to please everyone else it seems. I can only assume they enjoy their new direction, but it seems so forced to me - which makes me think they aren't doing this for them. Again, I think they are trying too hard to be like other bands, where they should just be Dream Theater.

My 0.02 cents.

Huge DT Fan here. And not in the sense of me being abnomally large, because I'm nomal size. More along the lines of them beign one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time.

I loved everything they've done up intil Train Of Thought. That album has it's high points, but it's too wanky and tasteless for me overall. I don't mind a bit of wankiness because they are after all a progmetal band, but TOT is a bit over the top. The other Jordan Rudess albums have their fair share of excessiveness, but there are soem really nice songs in there to balance it out. And I don't blame (insert keyboard player's name here) for their direction either. I think the music would have gone very much they way it did regardless fo who was playing keys.

Me also fan. I&W is my favorite album by them.

To spice up the conversation a bit, what does everyone think of their direction in recent years?
I think "Images & Words" is still my favorite, although I like "Scenes from a Memory" a lot also. Their last two albums were OK, but just don't seem as innovative as the earlier albums. I think they are more focused on making each album more complicated and meandering. On earlier albums, like I&W or Awake, where they were more focused on writing good songs with some solid hooks.

I think that DT ain't the same with out Kevin, just because he brought a lot of the "feeling" to the band. I think that the thing about I&W is it's feeling, there's something about those arragenments that makes it unique. After he left the band has a lack, and I just can't put my finger on it, I would rush to say that is the feeling but I don't know. SFAM is just a master piece from the composition point of view, I still haven't hear something as good as SFAM in what composition comes to, and I mean the way that they developed the themes and all the progressions, it's just amazing, thou they took a song from I&W to make this album and that says a lot.

I'm a big fan of them, be it with or without Kevin. Scenes From A Memory is one of my all-time favourite prog metal albums along with Images & Words and Awake. I also like Falling into Infinity which gets lots of negative reviews. As for their last one, Train of Thought, I think that one is a good album in its own right. It's not their best, but it's a good disc. Six Degrees is probably my least favourite DT album. Overall I think they're a very good band and each member is extremely talented.

I've been a fan since I heard Pull Me Under on the radio in '93. My favorite disc is Awake, followed by both I&W and SFaM.

I do like their newer material, especially disc one of SDoIT. ToT is good also, just different. It's not my favorite, but I don't hate it. I have a feeling that it will be like FII was for me: in a few years I'll listen and think "that's a damn good disc, despite some weak songs".

I do miss Kevin Moore's songwriting. I also wish Myung was able to get some songs together in time for consideration for the discs. Unlike some fans, I don't think the "blame" for no Myung songs rests completely on the soulders of MP and JP. As I understand it, the band voted (not MP and JP decided) to make it a requirement for any potential songs to be submitted in nearly-final format (not just lyrics).

I like DT a lot. Wanking has its place, but just not all over the CD! IMHCO, they should concentrate much more on songwriting. That's where it's at. Now, for a much better listening experience, try listening to my favorite band - :worship:Shadow Gallery :worship:. Now, there's a super-talented bunch of guys (with day jobs) that know how to lay down some serious prog! They take all aspects of songwriting into account including instrumentation, lyricism, melody, mood, wanking (at the right time :loco: ), and layering. Anybody else ever heard of them? I have all but their first CD which is out of print. :(

Shadow Gallery is a great band, I just can't believe that they haven't played live yet. :(

DT havent really taken a new direction with the new album...MP has said that they just wanted to do a heavy album so they did. Its not an indication of DT's style now. I'd say they tried something different rather than say they have taken a new direction...that sounds so permanent...like theyve become a gospel polka band or something, rather than being a prog metal band.

I love all of their stuff, but much prefer their newer material. Then again Im also a huge Jordan Rudess fan, so that could have something to do with it. His new solo album is going to blow a lot of people away!
